Inexpensive Aukey earbuds are kicking the pricey Jaybird X2’s butt!
In a recent blog I wrote about how yet another pair of the relatively expensive Jaybird X2 Bluetooth earbuds died on me. That’s a total of five failures of the high-end “sweatproof” Jaybird earbuds in less than one year.
On the recommendation of JSF member Derwinator, I recently picked up a pair of extremely inexpensive (I paid $20, but as of this writing they are selling on Amazon for less than 14 bucks!) Aukey Bluetooth earbuds. I’ve been wearing the Aukey earbuds on all of my daily rides for the past three weeks, and they are still going strong!
The Aukey earbuds have not had an easy time of it, either. It has been very hot, and I’ve been drowning them in my sweat. Of particular note, I did a hard solo metric century this past Sunday, and I was sweating heavily the entire ride (my average heart rate on that ride was nearly 170 BPM for almost 3 hours). The earbuds performed on that ride as they have on every other ride: flawlessly. No sound dropouts, excellent sound quality, good bass and a comfortable/secure fit with the included wings (several sizes and styles are in the box for a custom fit). Not even so much as a low battery warning.
I need to point out that the pictures on Amazon are not 100% accurate. I received additional styles and sizes of wings and foam tips not shown in the photos on Amazon (enlarge the below picture to see what’s actually included):
The inexpensive Aukey Bluetooth earbuds are outperforming the pricey Jaybird X2 earbuds in every respect–end of story. That’s especially shocking considering that one could purchase 10 pair of the Aukey earbuds for around the price of a single pair of X2 earbuds. I’m going to pick up a few spare pairs at the current low price. The Aukey earbuds come with a two year warranty, so if I have a problem at some point down the road I’ll have backup buds while I send the bad pair back for replacement.
After five failures in less than one year, I’m convinced that Jaybird Bluetooth earbuds are nothing more than overpriced garbage. I’d be extremely surprised if the X2s cost any more to manufacture than the Aukeys.
I’m putting the Jaybird earbuds in the same category as Oakley sunglasses (see this blog). You’re drastically overpaying for nothing more than a brand name and marketing, not a better product.
