Yesterday I made some more upgrades to the mobile functionality of JSF and the JSF Forums, and one of those upgrades is an all-new JSF Mobile app for Android and iOS smartphones!

Right now the app is mostly the same as the existing mobile sites, but it’s full screen (no URL bar taking up space), runs like any other dedicated app and is launched from its own JSF app icon on your phone.

The app is 100% free, and strictly optional. If you don’t want to use the app, then everything will continue to work perfectly using your preferred mobile web browser.

Getting the app on your phone is super easy, you don’t even visit the app store. Here’s a step-by-step tutorial with screenshots. Check the captions for additional information, click any image to enlarge.

Android Instructions (iOS instructions are below)

First, visit the main JSF web site using any mobile browser. You’ll see the following pop-up the first time you visit:

New mobile JSF visitors will see this pop-up letting them know about the availability of the new JSF mobile app.

Clicking the menu icon at top right (the three vertically stacked dots) produces the following:

The browser menu. Note the new availability of the menu item "Add to Home screen", second from the bottom. Click that.

Click “Add to Home screen”, customize the app name, if desired, then confirm:

After clicking the menu item "Add to Home screen", you'll see this confirmation dialog. Here you can change the app name from its default of John Stone Fitness if you like.

You’re done. That was easy!

All done! Note the new JSF app icon at middle left. Of course you can put the app shortcut anywhere you like, but I like it on the home screen. ;)

When you run the JSF app it will give you the same fully-responsive mobile experience as you’re used to, but no wasted space from browser URL bars and the like:

Running the native JSF app eliminates the space taken up by the URL bar.

Of course you can access the forums from the app, too! Just hit the “hamburger” menu bar at top left and select “FORUMS” from the menu:

Accessing the forums from the JSF app is as easy as hitting the menu bar at top left, and then clicking FORUMS.

Here are the forums running from within the new JSF app. You can always return to the main site from the forums by simply clicking the “Home” icon, just to the left of the blue “Forums” link:

iOS Instructions

First, tap the menu item that looks like a box with an up arrow:

Next, click “Add to Home Screen”:

At this point you can enter a custom title (optional) for the home screen icon. Click the “Add” button to add the icon to your device’s home screen. You’re done!

Another cool new feature I’ve got running on the mobile site is “endless scrolling”. This is a feature a lot of you have asked for. Basically as you scroll down the main page it will continue to automatically load more (older) blogs. Give it a try! EDIT: I disabled this because it made it impossible to reach the bottom of the screen where the social icons and the mobile/desktop switcher live.

I’ve also increased the number of current blogs that are featured in the large slider to six.

I’ve identified a few areas of the site that, unfortunately, are not working correctly on the mobile site. The areas affected include Recipes, Favorite Things, Current Promotions, the FAQ and my monthly/yearly ride reports. I am working on fixes, and hope to have the issues resolved sometime today. Again, only the mobile version of the site is affected by these issues.

I hope you all enjoy the new app. Leave a comment and let me know what you think!

  1. How does one click on the social network app buttons or the Mobile/Desktop toggle with the endless scrolling enabled…it just keep disappearing down when more blogs load? Can the loading of more blogs be an option at the bottom of the page?

    • Yeah, that’s one thing I don’t like about endless scrolling. It’s not a problem unique to this site, I see the same behavior lots of other places. If you click on a blog or pretty much any other section of the site then you can get to the social icons, but that’s not ideal.

I may disable the endless scrolling for this reason.

  2. I have found a minor inconvenience. When scrolling down on the main page with the mobile theme there are some symbols for sharing etc all the way at the bottom.(twitter, Facebook etc.) But you hardly get a chance to chose one of those or even look at them because when reaching the bottom older news will be loaded and subsequently the screen will automatically scroll up.
