General Tso’s Cauliflower – healthy, vegan and delicious!


A healthy vegan spin on a classic favorite. So good you’ll want a second helping; so healthy you can enjoy all you like guilt-free.

Ingredients – Cauliflower

  • 1 large head of cauliflower, cut into florets
  • 6 green onions, sliced diagonally into 1″ pieces
  • 1 teaspoon olive, grapeseed or vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon corn starch
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

Ingredients – Sauce

  • 1 teaspoon olive, grapeseed or vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 6 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons cane sugar (vegan), maple syrup (vegan) or honey (vegetarian)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch

Instructions – Cauliflower

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
  • Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and lightly grease with cooking spray.
  • Toss the cauliflower florets with the oil in a large bowl, then add the cornstarch and continue tossing until coated.
  • Place cauliflower on baking sheet and bake in the oven for 30 minutes, turning halfway though cooking.

Instructions – Sauce (prepare while cauliflower is roasting)

  • Place oil in frying pan over medium-high heat; add ginger and garlic and sauté for 2 minutes.
  • Add all remaining sauce ingredients and bring to a boil; whisk until smooth and thick.

Once the cauliflower has browned, remove it from the oven and transfer to a large bowl. Add the sesame seeds, the green onions and the sauce. Toss until well-coated. Serve immediately with rice.


Serves 2. Excellent when served with jasmine rice! Add some fresh broccoli to the cauliflower for a tasty variation. If the sauce reduces too much (careful with the heat!), just add a little warm water or warm vegetable stock.
