Excellent ride yesterday, but GPS let me down. GPS is awesome, but not perfect.

Even though I was feeling a little under the weather yesterday morning, I decided to head over to Wekiwa to do some mountain biking. I was excited about creating the very first Wekiwa segments on Strava, as there are presently none defined. A “segment” is essentially a defined section of trail that allows cyclists (and runners) to be ranked against their own previous efforts as well as all other athletes who have covered the same… [Read more]

The first of the Poblanos are ready to harvest; Riding this morning. Look at all these Poblano peppers!

One of my favorite splurge meals is a slight variation on Bobby Flay’s amazing Santa Fe Burger. I make this burger with lean ground beef, blue corn tortilla chips, pepper jack cheese and poblano peppers roasted with olive oil, salt & pepper. I usually serve the burger with roasted red potatoes. As splurge meals go, this one is far from over the top, but it’s incredibly delicious. Because we love this burger so much, this… [Read more]

Front brakes screaming like a banshee; Weight training today. I don't like riding with her.

Remember this past Saturday’s blog about how I used my home shop to modify a brake caliper mounting bracket? I was pretty proud of myself because I reduced the existing bracket by precisely 2.5mm, and the rotor and pad were perfectly aligned. Perfectly aligned on one plane, that is. I probably should have trail-tested the brakes before patting myself on the back. When I rode on Tuesday my front brakes were howling and squealing like… [Read more]

Started using Strava (It’s good to be the King!) A couple of screenshots of the free Strava app running on my android-based Samsung Galaxy S II phone. Also available for iPhone.

A very cool cycling (and running) training, tracking and competition service recently came to my attention: Strava. Rather than attempt to describe what this service does, I’ll simply post the synopsis in Strava’s own words: “Strava grew out of our own needs as athletes. With busy lives requiring much solo training, we missed the sense of camaraderie and friendly competition that drove us to achieve our best through training with others. We envisioned Strava as… [Read more]

Two major pond projects completed! The final result after all projects complete. The skimmer is hidden by an amazingly realistic looking faux rock cover.

While I was letting my minor calf injury heal last week, I needed to do something physical to stay active. I decided to tackle two fairly major pond projects that I’ve been wanting to do, but have been putting off. The first project was to lower the depth of the pond’s skimmer. Even though the skimmer was working fine at the depth I had originally installed it, it was a couple of inches higher than… [Read more]

New shrimp recipe posted; Up early this morning. Grilled Shrimp with Brown Sugar and Cayenne

Last night I made a new shrimp recipe that Lisa discovered (which I modified slightly): Grilled Shrimp with Brown Sugar and Cayenne Pepper. The amount of brown sugar in this dish is quite small–just enough to balance out the kick provided by the cayenne pepper. A little lime juice adds a nice hint of citrus, while the fresh garlic rounds out this simple, but delicious, recipe. Prepping this recipe took practically no time at all,… [Read more]

New rotors installed; Mounting bracket issue resolved thanks to home shop. New Magura Storm Rotor mounted on my Trek Fuel EX 8.

The new brake pads that I installed on my Trek Fuel EX 8 highlighted an issue that I was aware of, but had not been a problem worth addressing until the new pads were in place: out of true rotors. I knew my rotors (both of them) had a few very minor bends in them, but it wasn’t enough to cause rubbing on the pads. Well, once I got the new pads installed the tolerances… [Read more]

HD video footage of the trails at Mt. Dora. This is the lone "red" feature at Mt. Dora: it's 22 feet and nearly vertical.

I’ve had a few requests for video footage of the Mt. Dora trails, and so Tuesday I took my with me. I decided to film one complete lap of the main loop with all the “blue” (intermediate options). There are no cuts and no edits, so you see the whole main trail, which consists of “Florida Flow”, “Little Blue Roller” (blue), “Tacoma Trail” (blue), “Extra Crispy” (blue) and “Little Dipper” (blue). The first minute or… [Read more]
