I've noticed a huge difference in how my shoulder feels over the past couple of weeks. I discontinued doing my daily pushups on February 18th, and that seems to have made a world of difference. As many of you already know, I (foolishly) continued to do pushups every day after I injured my shoulder. I continued doing the pushups because they didn't seem to bother my shoulder (no pain while doing them), but now I'm pretty sure they were preventing the injury from healing completely. As I sit here right now, there is no pain at all in my shoulder! I've learned from experience that just because it doesn't hurt right now doesn't mean it's healed completely. In fact, I'm quite sure that it has not yet healed completely. I'm going to wait another full month before I start lifting again, maybe longer if I think I need to. I'm tired of starting back too soon and setting myself back. I'm also going to go to the doctor before I lift again and have an x-ray and MRI done. I'm hopeful that I will be able to resume my upper body workouts in April.
I'm going to go get something to eat now, but I'll see you all later on the forum.

Okay, it's long past time for me to buy a new digital camera. The one I have now is a Fuji "FinePix 1400 Zoom", and it has served me well for many years, but it's also very dated - only 1 MegaPixel, no ability to shoot videos, limited manual control, and so on... It also has some stuck pixels, and the battery door keeps breaking (I've replaced it 3 times now).
I've done quite a bit of research on the latest digital cameras and I keep coming back to Fuji and Canon. I love my Canon photo printer, and their cameras seem excellent based on the reviews I've read. I've been looking at the A80 and the G5.
The Canons look very good, however I'm really leaning towards the 6.3 MegaPixel Fuji FinePix S7000. It is a higher resolution camera compared to the two Canon cameras mentioned above, it uses the same batteries as my old camera (I won't have to buy a new battery charger and rechargeable batteries), and I already own a xD-picture card reader, which this camera can use. Another feature I really like about this camera that trumps the Canon is the 30 FPS 640x480 video capability. The videos are only limited in length by the size of media being used, so that's a huge selling point for me (I can finally add good quality videos to the site!)
Your suggestions and opinions on these cameras are needed, so let's talk about digital cameras today. I'm going to post this update in the Off Topic Forum. Look for the thread "Help me pick a new digital camera!". Please note that you must be a registered user to view or post to the Off Topic forum.
Thanks, see you there!

I'm so glad it's Friday. It's been "one of those weeks", and I'm really looking forward to my weekly culinary indulgence - a little pizza and wine is really going to hit the spot tonight.
This will probably be the last "free" weekend before Lisa and I will resume working in the yard every Sunday. It's warming up here
(not that it ever got all that cold), and it's been raining for the past few days so everything is going to start growing like
wildfire. I'm going wear a stronger sunblock this year so I don't get anywhere nearly as tan as I did last year. I like to have a nice
tan, but looking at my pictures from last summer I definitely went waaaay overboard. I looked like dried leather for a while there. I remember that
I was spending all my time outside with no shirt on because I was so happy to finally be thin again. Of course I'm going to do that again this
year, but this time I'll wear sunblock.
I've got to go do my cardio now, it's getting late. Have a great day!

Cool, it's leg day. I've always loved leg day, but now I especially look forward to it because it's the one day every week that I still get to train with weights (thanks to my shoulder injury). My favorite time of the day on Thursday is right after my leg workout when my legs are shaking and I'm standing in front of the stove making my oatmeal & egg whites while drinking a protein shake and eating a banana. My lower body workout is such a difficult workout that the sense of accomplishment I feel afterwards gives me a huge mental boost that lasts through the entire day. Sometimes when I'm doing my leg workout and I think I can't take anymore pain, I try to think about how great it feels once I'm done and standing at the stove, knowing I just went past what I thought was my threshold for pain, and past what I thought were my limits. That kind of thinking has brought me through some pretty tough workouts, and has allowed me to make some very nice lower body gains.
On a related note, I'll be so glad when my shoulder heals... I think about it constantly. When it finally does heal, I'm going to work my ass off on my upper body. My goals are 16" arms and a 42" chest. I also want to make some nice gains to my lats and traps, and round out my delts a bit more.
After all this talk about lifting I'm feeling pretty psyched so I'm going to go crank the music up and get started. Have a great day, see you later on the forum!

I'm running really late this morning. I've got a lot of issues to deal with for work, and then I'll be in meetings all day. :(
I'm going to go get my cardio while I can. Sorry for the short update! Have a great day, I'll see you on the forum tonight.

I know there are some extremely overweight people who see my site and think to themselves, "John wasn't really fat in his before picture - he doesn't even know the meaning of the word fat! I can't do what he did because I weigh 300/350/400+ pounds." If you are one of those people, I'd like to introduce you to forum member "Zef82". (Note: You must be a registered member of the forums to view this link.) This remarkable young man weighed 400+ pounds just 2 years ago. He now weighs about 235 pounds and looks and feels like a new man. Looking at his "before" pictures, anyone can see how difficult it must have been for him to even start, let alone stick with a weight loss program for any length of time... Are you hiding behind excuses, convinced that you'll always be fat and unhealthy? Zef82 is further proof that the power to change exists within us all. It may not be easy, but it IS possible.
Have a great day everyone, see you later!

A lot of people make the mistake of weighing themselves far too often once they become excited about losing weight. It's natural to want to check your progress, but checking your weight more than once every day is extremely counter-productive and can be quite stressful. Weighing yourself once every week is best, but if you can't wait that long (I obviously weigh myself daily), make sure you do it no more than once per day. Your weight is going to fluctuate quite a lot depending on how much fluid and food you have in you, and that's why once a week is best for most people. To ensure consistent results, be sure that when you do weigh in it's always at the same time and under the same conditions. I always weigh myself the very first thing in the morning in a fasted state, right after I go to the bathroom. If you do decide to weigh in every day, you've got to take into account that your weight can fluctuate several pounds from one day to the next. This is normal, so don't get frustrated! Take a look at my weight charts, the plot points move all around from day to day -- it takes weeks for real trends to show up. Most importantly, don't just use the scale! It's far better to measure yourself and look at your pictures and/or reflection in the mirror. Those things are much better indicators than the scale when it comes to checking your fat loss. Effective, permanent fat loss takes time. Be patient and the results will come.
I'm off to do my cardio and get started on my work week. Have a great day, see you later on the message board!

As I suspected, I've lost 1/4" from my arms and chest. Losing weight was easy compared to the frustration I'm feeling right now. I worked very hard for the muscle I managed to put on prior to my shoulder injury, so it's not easy sitting around waiting for my shoulder to heal as my upper body muscles atrophy.
I know today's post is uncharacteristically negative, but there's some value in that, and a lesson to be learned: everyone gets frustrated from time-to-time, and we all suffer setbacks. It's how you handle those setbacks that sets you apart from the rest of the crowd. It's OK to feel frustrated once in a while, but you've got to take those negative feelings and spin it into fuel and desire. Whatever you do, don't let a setback become an excuse to quit or give up. Right now I'm feeling frustrated, but I'm not going to dwell on it any more. I'm going to save it for later. When my shoulder does heal - and it will - I'm going to be a ******* animal in the weight room, and I will reach my goals.
OK! I feel much better now. Have a great day!

It's amazing how much better my shoulder is feeling this morning compared to just a week ago. I think all the things I've been doing to help it heal are starting to work. For the longest time I continued to do pushups every day because I didn't feel any pain when I was doing them, but earlier this week a few people on the forum set me straight about that and told me that I should stop doing the pushups. After a just a few days sans pushups, I've noticed a big difference. I definitely think those people were right on target with their advice. What can I say? Sometimes the desire to improve overshadows common sense. I'm going to try and not let that happen again.
There's an interesting discussion going on in the Fat Loss forum. Why do you workout and take care of your body? Is it for health reasons? Vanity? A combination of those things, or something else entirely? Come join the discussion!
I'm going to sign off for now, but I'll be around on the message board today. See you there!

I'm a little nervous about measuring my chest next week. It looks noticeably smaller to me, and I'm afraid all these months of being unable to work my upper body are beginning to show. I'm totally focused on healing my shoulder: of course I'm still not lifting, I've stopped doing my daily pushups, I've been doing my rotator cuff strengthening/rehabilitation exercises every single day and I'm making a conscience effort to not use my right arm/shoulder as much as possible. I've noticed a big improvement this week. Once it does heal, I've decided that I'm not going to continue with MAX-OT, at least not for a while. I'm looking into some (hopefully) equally effective strength training methods that will allow me to gain mass without injury.
If you have tried All The Whey's protein powders and would like to review them, or if you want to read reviews of their products from our members, then you'll want to check out the official All The Whey Protein review thread. If you've posted a review of their products elsewhere on the forum, please copy and paste your review to a new post in the official review thread. I think it's important that people see more than my opinion on their products, and a centralized review thread will make this easy.
I'm off to do my cardio now. Happy Friday! I'll see you later on the forum.

February 19, 2004
Yesterday I received a very interesting email from someone who used to follow MAX-OT training principles and injured himself while doing so--twice, in fact. He's 30 years old, and seems to be a very experienced lifter. He's not the first person I've heard from who has sustained injury while doing MAX-OT.
Sure, MAX-OT is a brutal program; but I've always warmed up correctly and used strict form, so I never thought it could have played a role in my shoulder injury. In retrospect, perhaps it was short-sighted of me to dismiss that possibility so quickly. I'm far from an old man, but I'm also not 18 anymore. Maybe my muscles are up to the task of Maximum Overload Training, but perhaps my joints, ligaments and tendons are not. I'm still not ready to say that MAX-OT contributed to my injury, but I am willing to accept that it's possible. I can tell you that once my shoulder heals, I don't ever want something like this to happen again. The guy who sent me the email has been using a (free) program called HST (Hypertrophy-Specific TrainingTM). He has been training using HST principles for over a year now, and has remained injury-free. He said he's made better gains using HST than any other program he's used before. I've been reading about it, and I'm interested. Have any of you used HST before? If so, please get a discussion going in the Weight Training forum. I'd love to hear more opinions on the program from people who have used it or know of the program.
I'd better go get my leg workout in now. I'll catch up with everyone later on the forum. See you there!

Coming up with something new to write about every single day for over a year can be difficult! Some mornings
I have all kinds of ideas and I can't type fast enough to keep up with my thoughts, but other mornings
(like this one!) I can't think of a single thing worth saying. I think it's best not to fight it - I have a workout
to do. I'll try to do better tomorrow, I promise.
February 17, 2004
Today would normally be my back and bicep day, but I'm still on the sidelines thanks to my rotator cuff injury. It's frustrating when I think of the gains I could have made over the last four months if I had been injury-free, but at the same time I feel fortunate for several reasons: I can still do my lower body workouts, I can still do my ab workouts and I can still do my cardio workouts. Also, I have lost very little (if any) of the upper body mass I gained prior to my injury. I've talked with many people who have been through similar injuries, and the general consensus is that only two things will allow the injury to heal completely: time and rest. I probably should not have done those test workouts a few weeks ago. My shoulder was almost healed, and I'm pretty sure those couple of workouts are why it's been hurting again recently. This time around I'm not doing any upper body workouts until there is zero pain, and I'm going to come back much slower than I did before. Unfortunately my impatience has cost me even more time.
If you are injured, don't make the same mistakes that I have made - let your injury heal completely before you try to use the injured area(s) again. Also, whatever you do, don't try to work through the pain; by doing so you stand a very good chance of making the injury even worse.
I hope you have a great day - see you later on the message board!

If you didn't visit this site over the weekend, then you may have missed the news: the new server was made live on Saturday afternoon! Everything seems to be working without a hitch. Browsing any of my sites (www.johnstonefitness.com, forums.johnstonefitness.com and www.twowiresthin.com should be noticeably faster - especially the forums because they have been moved from my home network to sit alongside my other sites on a much faster connection.
I had to quickly build a new server and co-locate it because the forums have proven to be far more popular than I had anticipated; they have not even been up for a month and we already have over 1,500 members! It's been really exciting to see the incredible progress many of the members have made in such a short time. The information and support of the community really does help, so if you are struggling to reach your goals, having a tough time getting started or just want to talk about health, nutrition, fitness and strength training, then please take a few minutes to register. By doing so you'll have full access to all of the forums (many of them are only accessible to registered members). Feel free to "lurk", or just jump in and say "hi". There's no need to be shy - just about everyone is going through, or has been through, the same things as you are.
I'd better get going, it's going to be a busy Monday. I had some extra "cheat" food on Valentine's day, so I want to get a great cardio workout in this morning. I'll be on the forums later today, so see you there. Have a great day!

The new server is running and everything seems to be working perfectly! I can see from the log files that 99.9% of you are hitting the new server, so I am going to shut down the old sites later today. Please let me know if you are having any problems or if something is not working correctly. Just make a post in the technical forum, PM me or email me. Thanks and enjoy!
Today I'm going to do a little performance tuning on the new server and tie up a few minor loose ends. Have a great day - I'll be on the forums later today, so talk to you then!

The new server is done and ready to go live! When Lisa gets home later this afternoon I'm going to take it to the co-location facility and bring it up on the new network. Once I get back home, I'll need to run a few more tests and then, time permitting, I'll shut down the old forum and move all the current data to the new server. Once the data is in place and I verify everything is working correctly, all that remains is to make the actual DNS changes. Within an hour or so of the DNS changes you should be hitting the new server! In addition to the forums, the IP address for this site and the IP address for my personal web page (www.twowiresthin.com) will be changing, so I'll make sure you know when you are hitting the new servers by indicating what's going on with an update to this Daily News item. I'm pretty excited about the new server - the speed difference should be appreciable, particularly at peak hours.
Lisa and I will be spending this Valentine's evening together enjoying a nice dinner and a good bottle of wine. We'll probably drop
in on the forums a few times tonight to make sure everything is running okay (assuming all goes well and the new server is live). Have a
great day, see you on the new server!
February 13, 2004
I got a lot of work done on the new server last night and everything is going very smoothly so far! I've installed, tested and configured all the major software packages and it all seems to be running without a hitch. About all I have left to do is swap out the internal IP configurations for the live IPs, tighten up the security, get a backup system in place and then take the server to the co-location facility. I'll probably take it Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. Once it's there, I'll come back home, give everything a detailed check, shut down the old forum, move the data to the new forum and run another test. Once I'm satisfied everything is working correctly I'll make the DNS changes. I know that quite a few the visitors to my site work in the IT field, so many you already know that once the DNS switch is made it will take some time for the old entry to expire from your ISP's cache (if you are a geek like me and run your own DNS server then you can clear the cache manually). I have the TTL (Time To Live) for both my sites set to one hour, so the delay should not be long if your ISP's DNS server does the Right Thing. Obviously I can't leave the forums running on 2 servers at once, but I will have a page up that lets you know you are still hitting the old server and that's why you can't access the forums. I may put up direct links to the IPs, but with the short TTL I don't think it will be necessary. I'm really excited about the new server. It's going to be so much faster then the old one, plus now the forums will have ample bandwidth and that's going to make a huge difference in speed.
An update of a completely different kind: my shoulder. Unfortunately it's still hurting even though I've not done any upper body workouts for the past couple of weeks. I'm giving it two more weeks and then it's back to the doctor. I really hope I don't have to have surgery, but after all this time I'm starting to get a little worried that it's still not healed. I'm glad I can still do cardio, abs and leg workouts...
I'm going to get my workout in now and then get my work out of the way so I can finish up the new server! Happy Friday, I'll see everyone later on the forums!

I was going to take my pictures this morning with a huge tub of All The Whey tucked under my arm, but I figured that not everyone would get the joke. *cough*
The new server (P4/1 Gig RAM/100 Gig Storage) for the forums is coming along very nicely! I've got the server built, the O/S (Gentoo Linux) is installed & tuned, and the co-location deal has been made. Now I'm slowly installing and configuring all the support applications in my ever-dwindling spare time after work. Once the new server is in place, I think you'll find the forums MUCH faster, thanks to the speed of the server and the much increased available bandwidth. Over the next couple of nights I'm going to really focus on getting the server finished, so I may not be around the forums as much as usual. If things go well I'm hoping to deploy the new server as early as this weekend!
Today is leg day, and I'm feeling great this morning THANKS TO THE MUSCLE-BOOSTING POWER FOUND IN EACH AND EVERY DELICIOUS SERVING OF ALL THE WHEY BRAND WHEY PROTEIN POWDERS!
Another joke there, folks - relax. Don't worry, this site and everything you love about it has not and will not change. I'm still the same old John, with the same sarcastic wit and the same desire to help everyone who comes here reach his or her goals. The fact that this site has a sponsor (and maybe more to come) is a GOOD thing because the sponsors help keep this site running, they don't alter what I write in my editorials one bit, they don't cost you a thing and they are easily ignored if that's your choice. I wrote every word of yesterday's daily news and was not asked to do so by All The Whey or anyone else. So if you think what I wrote yesterday was cheesy, then that's cool - I wrote what I did because that's how I honestly feel about the product and I just wanted to let everyone know why I liked the company so much and decided to accept their ads.
Ok, time to hit my quads, glutes, calves and hams! I hope you all have a great day, I'll see you later on the forums.
February 11, 2004
As you probably noticed, this site has its first official sponsor, All The Whey! I was contacted by All The Whey last week because they wanted to advertise their products on this site. I told them that I did not want to accept ads from just any old company, and that I would only accept their ad if I actually like, use and pay for their products. So, they sent me a few samples of their chocolate whey isolate and chocolate whey blend. I tried them both yesterday and absolutely loved them!
I honestly believe that you will love All The Whey's products as much as I do, and that's the reason I am whole-heartily endorsing them. Here are some of the things that impress me most about the company and their products:
- Their prices can't be beat: 5 pounds of whey concentrate/isolate blend is just $19.99; 5 pounds of pure whey isolate is an amazing $32.95! Prices are even lower per pound when you buy 10 pounds at a time.
- Low price guarantee. If you find a lower price on any volume, they beat it by 10%!
- Fair shipping costs: just $5.95 to ship any amount of whey within the continental US.
- International order are welcomed! Shipping is exactly what USPS International service costs - no extra "handling" fees!
- 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you don't like the protein for any reason, simply return it for a full refund.
- Taste. I thought the taste was awesome - right up there with Designer, EAS and Optimum. I've only tried the chocolate, but I trust their other flavors are just as tasty. They have chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and unflavored available. Banana and orange flavors are coming soon.
- They use the highest quality whey protein, verified by an independent lab. Check out the lab results here.
Sponsor or not, from now on All The Whey whey protein isolate is the protein powder I'll be using. Their protein is the same or better quality than any of the major brands I've used, I love the taste, it mixes easily and their prices simply can't be beat. Now I can finally buy whey protein isolate, because All The Whey whey protein isolate costs about what I was paying for my name-brand whey concentrate!
When you place your order, please be sure to mention that you saw their ad on John Stone Fitness!
By the way, just because All The Whey is the whey powder I use and is an official sponsor of this web site, you are of course free to post your unbiased, honest opinions on any and all products you use, including All The Whey.
I've got meetings all day, so I'm going to go work my abs, get my cardio done and head to the office. See you tonight on the forums!

Repeat from yesterday for those who did not see it:
I just want to let everyone know that I'm still about 3 weeks behind on my emails and they continue to come in at an amazing rate. There's no possible way I can answer them all, but I am reading each and every one of them. If you don't receive a reply to your email, please don't take it personally. I truly wish I had time to answer each and every one of them. I am trying to spend more time on the forums these days. Time spent there is a much better use of my free time because information posted there is seen by thousands of people, and not just one. If you have a question, please consider registering and posting it to the forums. You'll have a much better chance of getting a reply from me, and you'll also receive replies from our very knowledgeable and helpful forum members.
I'm in a rush this morning, so I'm going to go workout and then deal with about 1,000 issues at work. See you on the forum later today!

My shoulder is feeling good this morning, but I'm going to resist the temptation to lift and continue to rest it for another 3 weeks. I do not want to go back to the doctor, and I do not want to prolong this injury any more than I already have.
With almost 1300 registered members and well over 5,500 posts in the first couple of weeks, the forums have proven to be a huge success! Thanks to everyone who suggested that I start the forum, and of course many thanks to all of the members who have made it such a cool place to hang out.

Today I'm going to talk a bit about smoking. There are quite a few people out there trying to get in shape who still smoke. As a long-time, hard core smoker (2-3 packs a day for well over a decade), I know how hard it is to quit. When I crushed out my last cigarette a little over 3 years ago, the following months were some of the most difficult of my life. I won't lie to you, quitting took every ounce of self-control and discipline that I had in me. I stayed strong and, after a while, the cravings became weaker and less frequent. Now I never want a cigarette, and in fact can't stand to be around anyone who does smoke because I find the smell disgusting. Quitting smoking was probably the single most important thing I have ever done to improve my health. All this eating right and working out wouldn't mean a thing if I had continued to smoke and developed cancer or emphysema. No one likes to be a slave to anyone or anything, but a slave is what you are if you smoke - think about it.
The reason I am talking about smoking is because my wife, Lisa, has struggled to quit for many years. I'm happy to say that she has been smoke-free for 5 weeks now! I'm really proud of her because I know how hard it is to do what she is doing. I can't put into words how happy it makes me that she is finally quitting. I know it sounds selfish but,as I've said many times before, I can't imagine life without her. Way to go Lisa, keep it up!
If you are trying to quit smoking, there is at least one support thread going on the forums. Sometimes it helps to know others are going through the same thing you are, so feel free to jump in there and post or just read it if you like. Good luck!

My pager was silent all night long, so I had a restful night's sleep last night for the first time this week. I'm going to need the energy because today's leg day! My lower body workout is easily my most grueling. By the time I finish my lunges, which are the next-to-last exercise that I do, I can barely stand up. It's important to make all of your weight training workouts extremely intense. When you finish your workout, you should feel absolutely drained. I put every ounce of energy I have into my weight training workouts, and I always push myself to do better than I did the week before. I've noticed that the same drive that I've developed in the gym has bled over into other areas of my life. I truly believe that weight training has benefits that go far beyond muscle development.
OK, I've managed to get myself pretty motivated! Time to "shut up and squat!" Have a great day and, as always, I'll see you all later on the forums.

No time to write this morning - sorry! I'm running late thanks to my pager going off all night, and I need to go get my workout in and then get to work (meetings today, my favorite).
I'll be on the forums later today, after work, so see ya then. Have a great day!

I've added a couple new recipes to the recipe section (further down on this page). These two favorites of mine have already been posted on the recipe forum, but I wanted to put them here on the main page as well. Our forum members have posted many more tasty and nutritious recipes on the forums, but you'll need to register before you can see them.
I've got another busy day ahead, so I'm going to get going. I'll catch up with everyone later on the forums. Have a great day!

We had some guests over yesterday to watch the Super Bowl and I decided to have some pizza and some wine. Ugh, I'm feeling tired and bloated this morning (not enough sleep, +3.2 pounds), but I'm going to push through and go do my cardio (I really need it!)
I'm running late and have a lot of work to do today, but I'll catch up with everyone later on the forums. See you there!

A lot of people ask me how I take my measurements. I take them all "cold" but flexed, which simply means that I flex the muscles I'm measuring, but I have not performed any exercises beforehand that would cause them to fill with blood (better known as "pumped"). When muscles are pumped, they are quite a bit larger compared to when they are cold; for example, my arms are about 1/2" larger after a upper body weight training workout. I measure my whole body at least once a week, usually on Sunday or Monday. Measuring is a great way to keep track of your gains and losses. Consistency is the key, so make sure that you measure the same way every time. Most people I know measure using the cold but flexed "method".
We had a lot of fun on the forum yesterday.
"Maximus" put his excellent Photoshop skills to work and really made me look like a complete fool
(as if I need any help in that department!) My wife is never going to let me live this one down, I think
she's going to make it her desktop wallpaper. Thanks Maximus!
If you have not seen what I'm talking about, you'll find the post ("The Forums' Official Mascot") in the Off-Topic forum.
You'll need to be a registered member to see it.
I'm going to sign off now, but I'll be around today on the forum. See you there!
