February 28, 2005

I don't get it. I'm eating a meager 2,000 calories per day, I'm losing fat, and my lifts have been going UP. Yesterday's workout (pecs/delts/triceps) was insane! I went up in reps and/or weight for every single exercise that I performed (compared to last week). My bench press is almost back to where it was at the end of my bulk, and my incline bench press is right at the weight/reps I was using at the end of my bulk - except now I'm 15 pounds lighter! I did start taking creatine again a few days ago, and that's the only thing I can think of that could explain the strength gain. Or maybe my body is just good at adapting to different caloric levels. I don't know. Anyway, I'm extremely pleased with how this cut is going; I've been cutting for 2 months, I've lost about 15 pounds and I've lost no strength to speak of. I know I could lose weight a lot quicker if I wanted to, but my patience seems to be paying off. I think tomorrow's monthly pictures are going to look a lot better than last month's photos: almost all the weight I've lost is body fat and, because I'm more cut now, I think I actually look bigger today than I did a month ago. Of course this could all be wishful thinking on my part. :) I guess we'll all see tomorrow!

Don't forget: I'll also be announcing a new sponsor tomorrow. I think you all are going to like this new sponsor - I know I do!

I took my weekly measurements this morning and was happy to see that I've lost another quarter inch off my thighs and my waist. The fat is really starting to come off now, and it should show in my monthly pictures on Tuesday (although I've still got about another 10 pounds or so to lose before I'm at 8% body fat). Since I started cutting in January I've lost 1.5 inches off my waist, 3/4 of an inch off my hips and 1 inch off my thighs. The slow cut seems to be doing a great job of preserving my muscle - I've lost less than a quarter inch off my arms, and less than a 1/2 inch off my chest and I'm lifting the same, or very close to the same, weights that I was lifting at the end of my bulk.

In other news, JSF has another new sponsor! Look for the official announcement on Tuesday, March 1st. I can't say much right now, but I will say that I'm very excited about this sponsor. This company is going to be an excellent compliment to our already strong lineup.

Don't forget - just two days left! Our newest sponsor, AtLarge Nutrition, is running an awesome deal for JSF visitors through Monday, February 28, 2005. For just $49.95 you are going to get:

I'm pleased to report the situation with All The Whey has been resolved. If you missed the update yesterday, you can read it here.

One look at my weight chart will show that I held to my word and skipped my cheat meal last night. It sure was a challenge to do so: not only did I skip my cheat meal, but I also prepared Lisa's pizza for her. Most of you know pizza is my favorite food in the world, so cooking Lisa's pizza and then cutting it was pure torture for me. I think I may have cried just a little bit. So, I served Lisa her pizza and then dutifully ate my chicken breast and broccoli. This morning I was rewarded for my discipline; instead of gaining 3-4 pounds of water and fat, I've lost another 1.8 pounds, which puts me at 198.2 pounds - the lightest I've been in almost 3 months. Ironically I've been back on creatine for a few days, too. Anyway, I measured my arms and chest this morning and have lost no muscle size at all.

Cheat meals just don't work for me when I'm cutting. They set me back too much. I'll resume my cheat meals when I reach my cutting goals, but until then no more pizza and no more alcohol. It's worth it. I love waking up feeling lean and mean. Something else I've done over the past 2 days is I've eliminated brown rice from my diet. I think I'm just extremely carb-sensitive. I'm going to continue like this, getting most of my carbs in the morning post-workout. 8% body fat, here I come!

Don't forget - our newest sponsor, AtLarge Nutrition, is running an awesome deal for JSF visitors through Monday, February 28, 2005. For just $49.95 you are going to get:

I've got some good news, and some bad news this morning. First the good news!

Our newest sponsor, AtLarge Nutrition, is running an awesome deal for JSF visitors through Monday, February 28, 2005. For just $49.95 you are going to get:

That's over $22.00 in savings, allowing you to try a few of AtLarge's products for one low price. Click here for more details and to place your order. Now for the bad news. Our oldest sponsor, All The Whey, seems to be having some problems. Unfortunately I can't get information from them because I've not had any of my calls returned. It is with great regret that I must ask you all to not place any orders with ATW until I can straighten this out. If I can't get a very good explanation for the extreme delays some have been experiencing over the past few days, as well as the terrible communication/customer service, I'll have no choice but to drop them as a sponsor. I've always been 100% honest with the people who visit JSF, and I'm not going to stop now. If ATW can't hold up their end of the deal, then they will no longer have my recommendation or support and the support of the JSF community. Basically what I'm saying is, this problem will be 100% resolved by tomorrow or All The Whey will be let go.

Sorry to end on such a negative note, but I want everyone to be aware of what's going on. Thanks again for your continued support. I'm off to do cardio now!

UPDATE: Ok, I just spoke at length with a representative of All The Whey.

I was very frank with my concerns, and said that the lack of communication is absolutely unacceptable.

Here's the deal:

First of all, ATW is using all new equipment. The ingredients and the way they make their whey has not changed one bit. I have been given every assurance in the strongest possible way that nothing has changed from a quality standpoint.

At that point in the conversation I mentioned that several customers have posted on JSF about various quality issues, and ATW insisted that I ask anyone who feels the quality of their product is not everything it should be, to please call them (toll-free) at 1-877-255-8439. I was promised that the whey will be replaced at no charge, and ATW will pay to have the bad product shipped back at their expense so they can find out what the problem is.

Next I talked about customer service, and how important it is to maintain good communication with the customers. He agreed, and admitted that their customer service has suffered recently due to several factors: the move, the new equipment and a key employee leaving the company. I was assured that these problems are now behind them, and they are caught up on their orders. That means if you have an order with ATW, you should be getting it very soon (if you have not already received it). The reason some of you experienced such a long delay is because there was a malfunction with the new equipment that resulted in a large amount of whey being ruined. The Fed-ex labels were already printed and customers mailed, so that's why the long lapse. I told him that I understood that these things can happen, but what I can't accept is the lack of communication. ATW has my direct number, and I've been promised that any future issues will be communicated directly to me so that I can let you all know what's going on. They are taking this very seriously.

Again, I've been assured that ATW's problems are behind them and you will once again receive the same quality and service that you have come to expect from ATW.

If you experience any problems with your order, please call them and they will make it right. If they don't, I want to hear about it.

Thanks again for your patience and continued support!

February 24, 2005

I like to cycle my creatine use; I seem to get better results when I take a break from using it. I've been cycled off creatine for almost 2 months, so I'm going to resume taking it today. I'll put on some weight as a result, but it will be lean mass and not fat so that's cool. After Tuesday's incredible workout, I'm really excited about adding creatine back into the mix because that should improve my strength even more. I'll need it, because I'm probably going to cut another 100-150 calories from my daily caloric intake very soon. I'm gaining strength and not losing much weight at my current caloric levels.

I was looking at myself in the mirror yesterday after my abs workout and I'm actually fairly happy with my overall body fat percentage and how I look right now, but I've got that damned fat roll just below my belly button that (IMO) ruins my physique. It's amazing how drastic the difference is: I've got a nice, flat washboard mid-section all the way down to my belly button and then BOOM - a roll of fat. My body just likes to put fat in that little area first, and it's always the last to go (but I've never got rid of it completely, even when I was down to 8% body fat). It sucks, because I would be almost done cutting if it were not for that fat roll. Unfortunately I have to keep dieting down to ridiculous levels to get rid of it as best I can. It's frustrating to work so hard and have one thing prevent you from obtaining the physique you desire. I don't know what the answer is. Some have suggested lipo is the only solution, but to me that's not an option due to the health risks. When vanity take precedence over your health, something's seriously wrong. I guess the main reason I'm bring all this up is because it's important to not let your genetic limitations and problem areas deter you from your fitness goals. I realize that no matter what I do I may never entirely get rid of the damned fat roll that has plagued me for most of my life, but I don't let my problem area stop me from giving 100%, or use it as an excuse to give up.

Weird. Even though I'm cutting, I actually went up in weight and/or reps yesterday on 4 different exercises. I started off with dumbbell curls, and after my warm-up sets I moved on to my working sets using the same weight I used last week. I managed 2 more reps on the first set, and 1 more rep on each of my 2nd and 3rd sets (as compared to last week). Next I moved on to barbell curls, and decided to add 5 pounds to what I did last week (which put me back at the same weight I was curling at the end of my bulk). I cranked out 8 reps on the first set, 7 on the next set and 6 reps on the last set! The rest of my workout went very well, and I managed to increase my reps on concentration curls and dumbbell rows. My arms and chest also seem to have grown a little bit: my arms are slightly larger than 16 inches again, and my chest is near 42.75 inches (both measurements taken cold/flexed). My weight loss has been very slow and controlled; it's almost as if my body has adapted to the lower caloric intake and is still somehow able to grow, albeit slowly. I've been eating very clean and have been very strict on my cutting diet, so it looks as if I may need to cut my calories some more. I can think of no other explanation. It just goes to show you that you can take advice from experts, read, research and study as much as you like, but ultimately there's one voice that deserves most of your attention: learn to listen to your body. No two people are exactly alike, and when all's said and done you've got to do what works best for you.

I'd better get started on my workout: cardio and abs. Have a great day!

February 22, 2005

A week from today and March 2005 will be here! Swimsuit season is fast approaching, but it's not too late to get going on a fatloss program if you're one of those people who have been putting off getting started. Need motivation? Just have a look around the forum and check out all the amazing success stories. People just like me and you are making incredible changes in their health and personal appearance and they are doing it the RIGHT way. I admire that most of the people on the forum are losing weight by making permanent changes to the way they eat and live their lives. Those who jump on fad diets and rely on pills and drugs are just playing out another round in a sad cycle - a cycle that will continue until they realize that weight loss and health are really not that difficult. It's only a matter of taking some time to learn the facts about healthy weight loss and lifestyle changes. Why do it the hard way, when doing it the right way is so much easier and so much more satisfying? If you are reading this and feeling unhealthy and fat, then do something about it. Do it TODAY and tomorrow you'll be that much closer to your goals. Do nothing and you'll wake up tomorrow feeling just like you do now (or worse), knowing that you let another day of opportunity go to waste.

February 21, 2005

We had a great time this weekend at the First Annual JSF Cheat Meal! It was thrown together with very little notice, so there were only nine of us in attendance but it was still a lot of fun. If you missed yesterday's Daily News update, you can find my pictures here. Andi also took photos, and I'm sure she'll post them when she gets back to her home city.

So, that meal was my last real cheat meal until I reach 8% body fat. I am still going to have lean steak once per week, and I may toss in a potato on "steak day", so that's kind of like a cheat meal. But no pizza, no alcohol and no sweets!

Time for my cardio, then I've got a fairly busy day of work ahead. I hope you have a great day - see ya tomorrow!

February 20, 2005

Last night was the first official JSF group cheat meal! It was a small but lively gathering, and Lisa and I had an absolute blast! It was a lot of fun to finally meet those of you who could attend. I know this year's event was on very short notice, but you can go ahead and ink in Saturday February 18, 2006 for next year's group cheat meal (location TBA). We're also going to be planning a major JSF gathering for sometime this summer, location and date to be discussed and determined on the forums.

I took a few pictures of this year's event, and they can be found here. Andi took a bunch of photos, but she won't be able to post them until she gets home.

Workout time! Have a great Sunday. :)

February 19, 2005

I'm finally below 200 pounds again, and down to 11% body fat! I lost another 1/4 inch off my waist this week, and my thighs are almost down to 24 inches. My arms and chest are still at 16 inches and 42.5 inches, respectively. I'm sure by tomorrow I'll be back over 200 pounds again, thanks to tonight's first annual JSF cheat meal gathering. This will probably be my last real cheat meal until I reach my body fat goals. I'll probably still have lean steak once a week, and that will become a cheat meal of sorts. So yeah, I'm going to give up my favorite food in the whole world (pizza) for a while. It's time to get 100% committed to my fat loss program and be extra strict with my clean diet. That's what it takes to get below 10% body fat. It'll all be worth it in a few months: pizza tastes a lot better with a 6-pack. ;)

February 18, 2005

No cheat meal for me again tonight, as Lisa and I will be going out tomorrow night with a dozen or so JSF members for dinner and drinks. Tonight I'll be having chicken and broccoli, while Lisa will undoubtedly test my resolve by savoring a delicious pizza. Tomorrow she'll wake up and say "wow, I lost 2 pounds!" Damn ectomorphs... ;)

Cardio time - Happy Friday everyone!

February 17, 2005

I'm going to be skipping my normal Thursday steak dinner and having fish instead (something new: Alaskan Cod!) I'm also thinking about doing away with my weekly cheat meal after this week - at least until I reach my cutting goals. It seems like just one cheat meal a week is setting me back quite a lot. I may give it a couple more weeks (until the end of the month), but if things don't start improving by March 1st, I'm going to go into 100%, full-on, "old school-style" John Stone fatloss mode. ;)

February 16, 2005

I've lost 2.2 pounds since yesterday, so I must have been losing fat but retaining some water. Normally I don't retain that much water so long after my cheat meal, so that kind of threw me. Just when you think you know your body, it does something unexpected! :)

Yesterday's workout was great! I sure don't feel like I'm cutting when I'm in the weight room: I have plenty of energy and my lifts have been really solid. For example, yesterday I went up a couple of reps on dumbbell and barbell curls (same weight as last week), and I added one rep to each set of concentration curls.

I think my slow cut is paying off. I still have not lost any size in my arms or chest since the initial quarter inch (arms) and half inch (chest) drop after coming off creatine and reducing my calories. That was like a month ago, so it seems like most of the gains I made during my bulk are sticking. One thing I noticed is that I really need to work on my lats and overall width of my upper back. Next year when I bulk I'm going to make my back a top priority.

I'd better get moving: today is cardio + abs!

February 15, 2005

I switched several of my pecs/delts/triceps exercises on Sunday and I sure am feeling it now! My pecs are really sore this morning, and so are my triceps. No matter how much I switch things around, I always do bench presses and dumbbell extensions, and this past Sunday I went up in reps for both exercises. I don't understand how I seem to be gaining strength on my cutting diet. I'm currently eating almost half of what I was eating at the end of my bulk and I'm no longer taking creatine. Also, my arm size increased a little this past week. My weight loss seems to have leveled off, but my waist and thighs continue to shrink. I find it hard to believe that I could be adding muscle at only 2,200 calories per day, but I don't know what else to think at this point. I'm not going to cut any more calories from my diet, but I may start getting a little more careful about separating my carbs from my fats over the next month or so.

Time for my biceps, back and traps workout. Have a great day!

February 13, 2005

Those of you who are dieting may not want to read today's update. I'm going to describe last night's cheat meal in graphic detail!

Last night Lisa and I got all dressed up and went to Del Frisco's for a romantic dinner. It was incredible! The atmosphere was just the way I think a nice steakhouse should be: I loved all the rich, dark woods, the dim, romantic lighting and the leather furniture. It was a little louder than I'd expected, but that was really just one group of people that quickly departed. The service was absolutely perfect: our server was very friendly and helpful. She was never in the way, but our glasses were always filled with water and wine, and fresh bread was always on the table. Speaking of the bread, it's baked fresh everyday and is extremely good! The wine list is expansive and pricy - the house wine is $36.00 a bottle. We went with a Merlot - L'Ecole No 41. It was a very good wine, but overpriced. We had the crab cake appetizer and it was very, very good. No fillers, baked not fried and served with an absolutely amazing Cajun lobster sauce. We ate every bite! Soon after we finished our appetizer, the main course arrived. I had filet mignon and I can honestly say it was the best steak I've ever had in my life. It was cooked to perfection and the taste and texture of the beef was melt-in-your mouth perfect. When I finished the last bite I felt a little like crying. Our server informed us that the sides were huge (everything is a la carte) and that one side would be enough for both of us. Good call. We shared the chateau potatoes, which we'd heard were a "must-have" item. We heard right. The whipped potatoes tasted like they were made with butter, dill, garlic and chives and were a perfect compliment to our main course. For dessert I wanted the chocolate mousse, but Lisa wanted to try the bread pudding in Jack Daniel's sauce. We were both too full for more than one dessert, so I agreed to the bread pudding, which has never been a favorite of mine. It was better than I expected, but I didn't eat much of it. Lisa loved it! After all that we had a couple of cappuccinos, which our server removed from the check without us even having to ask because "they didn't make them quite right." True, they were more like lattés than cappuccinos, but we didn't care and wouldn't have said anything but she removed them from the check anyway. I just added the 9 bucks (nothing's cheap at Del Frisco's!) for the free coffee to her tip, which is what I suspect she had in mind all along. ;)

Time for my workout - pecs/delts/triceps. Have a great day!

February 12, 2005

Because Lisa and I are going out to dinner tonight, I was a good boy and had chicken and green beans last night (my usual cheat meal night). Lisa, who is very ectomorphic and could lose weight eating nothing but bear claws and sticks of butter, put my resolve to the test last night by eating a pizza. Pizza is my favorite food in the whole world, but I managed to overcome the craving and stuck to my planned diet. I was rewarded this morning by losing no weight at all! ;) With my reduced caloric intake, I don't know how I could be putting on any muscle right now, but my waist size is decreasing and I'm looking noticeably leaner - yet I don't seem to be losing much weight on the scale. I've also noticed more vascularity in my arms. One thing I've learned over the past couple of years is to not put too much stock into what the scale reads. As long as my waist is shrinking and my muscles are not, I'm cool.

Cardio time, then a haircut and maybe a movie before Lisa and I have our fancy dinner this evening. Should be a fun day - hope yours is, too!

February 11, 2005

No cheat meal tonight. I'm saving that for tomorrow night because Lisa and I are going out for a romantic Valentine's dinner (I know Valentine's day isn't until Monday, but we both have to work late Monday.) The dinner should be a lot of fun - we're going to a really upscale restaurant and we're going to be dressed to the nines: I'll be wearing my best suit, and Lisa will be wearing her newest "little black dress". She looks stunning in it! It should be a very nice evening. Now if I can just get over my "fear" of handing over the keys to my S2000 to the valet. ;)

Cardio time - see ya!

February 10, 2005

I'm definitely starting to lean out since I cut my calories back a bit more. My weight has only dropped another couple of pounds, but my mid-section is starting to become noticeably more defined. I measured my arms and chest this morning and I've not lost any muscle size at all - in fact my arms are slightly larger today compared to the same time last week! Last week my arms were just below 16 inches, this week they are right on 16 inches (cold/flexed). Yeah, I'll take that! Also, I'm starting to feel more lean. I feel like I've switched gears and am finally 100% into the fat-loss groove.

Last night I had wild Chilean sea bass for dinner, served with brown rice and asparagus. It was a nice switch from the salmon I normally eat on Wednesdays. Very healthy (check food log for macros). I made it with olive oil, lemon, white wine, crushed black pepper, fresh garlic and capers. Wow - that's one great tasting fish! It's also very expensive, so I don't think I'll be having it very often.

Time for my workout. Have a great day!

Trimming a few more calories from my daily intake seems to be doing the trick. I'm down to 201.6 pounds, and that's the lightest I've been in two months. After an initial reduction when I first started cutting and came off the creatine, my muscles have not lost any more size. Things seem to be back on track, and I'm feeling better about my progress. I'd like to be down to around 194-195 pounds by March 6th. After that, I'll re-evaluate where I am and take it from there.

Time to hit the weights - see ya!

February 7, 2005

When Lisa and I were out on Saturday, I decided to pick up a couple new pair of jeans. Simple, right? I've always liked Levis, but I was open to trying new brands. Well, nothing fit! It seems now all the popular styles are for people with chicken legs. I worked hard to build my quads to 24.5 inches, but I can't stand wearing jeans that are tight on my thighs - I like a nice loose fit. The only Levis jeans that are big enough in the thigh (without having to buy a waist size 10 times too big for me) are the Silvertab baggy jeans. Well, we went all over the place and I couldn't find them anywhere! I even went to the mall, which I really hate doing. Eventually I gave up and ordered them online when I got home (I should have done that to start with!) Man, doesn't anyone do squats anymore? ;)

Cardio time and then I start a nice, normal 55-hour work week! This week is going to seem like a vacation after the past month!

February 6, 2005

Lisa and I had a great day yesterday. It felt really good to get out of the house, get away from everything and not worry about work. Thankfully my pager has not gone off even once so far this weekend. I hope that continues for the rest of today!

I only lost 3.2 pounds from January 6 - February 6. Not too good. I know I'm focused on conservative fat loss, but I think 3.2 pounds in a month is a little too conservative. I've been eating clean, so I'm probably just eating too much. I'm going to be cutting back on my calories some more and pushing things along a bit. One thing that's different this time around compared to the first time I lost weight is now I'm under a lot more scrutiny. I have to admit that I've allowed a lot of "arm-chair quarterbacking" (a football analogy seems appropriate today, no?) to influence my fat loss plan this time around. I'm going to level with you all: sometimes it sucks having everything you do studied and picked apart by so many people. You know what? I know what's best for me and my body, and I'm going to do what I think is best. No offense, but unsolicited advice - no matter how well intentioned - is not something I'm interested in hearing right now. :)

After this morning's workout, Lisa and I are heading out for the day. I need to get away from my computers, get some fresh air and recharge my batteries. This past month has been extremely difficult and mentally draining, but I'm proud of myself for not missing any workouts, eating all my meals and eating healthy (with one exception) and keeping up with the daily updates to this site. I don't care how busy you are, there's always time to train and eat right if you really want to do it. Don't let work/school/life get in the way of your health. You deserve to be healthy and fit!

I'm off to do my cardio and then I'm outta here for the day!

Today brings a close to what I've not-so-affectionately dubbed "hell month" at work. Thankfully everything has gone as good as (or better than) I'd planed. This weekend I'll be taking Saturday and Sunday off and doing... oh, nothing much! One thing's for sure: I won't be spending much time on the computer. I definitely have a love/hate relationship with computers and networks.

Happy Friday!

Things went extremely well at work yesterday. All the hard work and planning over the past month paid off, and the project was a 100% success. I'm feeling tired but very happy this morning. The next couple of days will be spent tying up loose ends and finishing up the details. This weekend I plan to rest and take a couple days off, and next week things should be back to "normal" (whatever that means!)

I'm in a huge rush this morning - my project at work is coming to a head today.

Oh, this site and the forums may go down briefly a few times today (I need to make some hardware changes).

It's been a month since I started cutting and I've lost 9 pounds. I've lost a little strength and size, but I attribute that mostly to the water loss and going off creatine. I'm lifting the same weights or, in a couple of cases, just 5 pounds less, compared to what I was lifting at the end of my bulk. I actually put on a little over a pound this past week, probably because of my extra cheat meal. It may also be time to shave a few more calories off my daily intake (maybe 150 or so).

I'm not real happy with this month's pictures: I'm in between looking big from bulking and carrying too much fat to really show the muscles. I expect next month's pictures to look much better, and the month after that to be very close to my goal. Slow and steady.

In case you missed the announcement, we've added a new sponsor! Check out the details and my review here.

I'm running way behind because I had to take my monthly pictures this morning, so I'd better get my workout done and get to work. It's going to be another very long, difficult day but we're getting there. I expect by the end of the week I'll have completed 95% of the project I'm working on.
