I'll be installing some hardware upgrades to the JSF servers today, including new, larger hard drives. There should be no data loss, but there will downtime. I'll update this announcement once the upgrades have been completed.

UPDATE: I'm afraid there were some issues with the hardware upgrades. I'm sorry for the extended downtime. Bottom line: the new hard drives are not installed. I'm going to re-schedule the hard drive installation for next weekend, probably Saturday. Thanks for your patience!

July 30, 2005

Lately I've been doing my pecs/delts/triceps workout on Sunday, but this morning I woke up just itching to lift. I'm going to move my cardio to Sunday and lift weights today. I have some great new lifting music: I picked up a couple more Hatebreed CDs, two more Fear Factory CDs, and a Shadows Fall CD. The Shadows Fall CD came with a sampler CD with tunes from God Forbid, The Haunted, Diecast, Heaven Shall Burn and Stampin Ground. Because it was a free sampler CD, I don't think there's any problem with providing the songs here, so click the links to check the sample tunes out. Most of it is excellent lifting music - fast, loud and aggressive. Some of it doesn't do much for me even after a few listens, but a few of the tunes have really grown on me. If you like any of the artists, support them by picking up their CD. I know I'll be picking up a few. Of course if you consider songs by Bruce Springsteen and Sting to be intense lifting music then you should probably stay away. In other words, YMMV.

I'm going to go get some food in me and get ready to lift. Lisa's still away on business, so I've got the stereo BLASTING. If any of my neighbors are reading this - sorry!

I'm in the fatloss zone right now! I feel like I did during my initial weight loss: totally dedicated and absolutely, 100% unstoppable. Looking at my "2005 Cutting Phase" chart is very telling. I should have called everything after the first three months "maintenance mode", because that's exactly what it was: essentially I made no weight loss progress for over three months. BTW, that huge drop in weight right before my first vacation was due to the flu (I couldn't keep anything down for a few days). Anyway, the last bit of fat is finally coming off: my diet and training are 100% dialed in and producing excellent results and my dedication is at an all-time high. It's been a fun break, but it's over. This past week has been very encouraging (I'm down another 1/4 inch from my waist this morning!) Monday is "monthly picture" day, and I should look considerably better than I did last month. By this time next month I'm going to be totally shredded, count on it.

July 28, 2005

I took the new stationary bike on its inaugural "ride" yesterday. Not bad, not bad at all - especially considering the sub-$300 price. I did HIIT cardio on it, and it was smooth and quiet. I do have a couple of minor gripes. First, the rubber foot straps don't seem very durable. I don't think the straps are going to last very long, but who knows? Maybe they are stronger than they look. Also, the drink holder is practically parallel to the floor and pretty much useless. Thankfully the bike is low enough to the ground so that I can put my water bottle next to me on the floor.

I've decided against having pizza tomorrow night. I'm on a fatloss roll right now, and I want to keep the momentum going. In fact, no more pizza for a while. Tomorrow night I'm going to have fish instead of pizza. I'll still have a weekly "cheat" meal, but it will be something a little less over-the-top, like a sirloin burger.

I'm a bachelor for the next 3 days. Lisa has to attend her quarterly meeting and will be out of town. You know what that means: three days of beer, strippers and loud music. Shhhh.

July 27, 2005

I have a lot of updates today. First off, HIIT is really doing the trick for me. I guess my body just responds well to it. I'm below 190 pounds this morning, and my muscles have not lost even the tiniest bit of size. I'm feeling very encouraged right now. That was one heck of a plateau I was in. I think my body needed a shock.

The new recumbent exercise bike I bought last week came in yesterday. I got it together last night - here's a picture. It's nothing fancy, but at least it's quiet and smooth. One day I'd love to get something much nicer, but I think this will do fine for now. I'm going to alternate my cardio workouts between the bike and the elliptical. I've updated my Home Gym page with this new information.

I had an awesome back and biceps workout yesterday, and I gave my Titan Photo Journal a long overdue and lengthy update. This update covers all of the exercises I performed yesterday. I tossed in a few new pictures, too!

I see I'm running out of time, so I'd better wrap things up. Have a fantastic day!

The forums sure have grown a lot over the past year. There has been a massive influx of new members, many of whom are extremely passionate about improving their health and personal appearance. I admire the newfound passion and desire many of these new users have for fitness; nurturing that desire is a big reason the forums exist. I've noticed that quite a few new users are posting prolifically, and perhaps analyzing things a bit too much. I understand that many of you have questions, but many of the questions I'm seeing have already been asked and answered - often dozens of times. There is a lot of information on JSF and on the Internet. Please take some time to do some research - use the search feature! Posting dozens of threads with basic questions is counter-productive and, frankly, annoying. Also, please use descriptive thread titles! Thread titles like, "Question?!?!?!" are totally pointless.

Please don't misunderstand: I'm not trying to discourage newbies from posting. I'm just trying to cut down on some of the redundant posts by encouraging members to do a little research before asking a question. Thanks!

July 25, 2005

After a long plateau, I finally made some progress this week. I lost 1.8 pounds of fat and a 1/4 inch off my waist. No loss in muscle size. I'm feeling encouraged by this small bit of progress, and will definitely continue doing HIIT. I hope to see similar results this week.

I know many of you are busy with other activities and don't have time to read the site over the weekend. Now that most of you are back at work with nothing to do, you might want to check out Saturday's update if you missed it - especially if you are new to fitness and are feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of conflicting information.

Time to work up a sweat and then get started on what is going to be a long and challenging week at work!

July 24, 2005

I must have pulled a muscle in my lower back lifting on Thursday. It was hurting pretty bad all day yesterday. I put some heat on it and Lisa gave me a nice massage. Thankfully today it's much improved, but still tender. I don't think it's going to affect today's workout at all. It's mostly bending that hurts. I'm sure it's just a strained muscle, so nothing to worry about. I've got to be more careful on leg day - first the rib, now this!

Other than my workout, I'm going to try and relax today. It's been a heck of a long work week, and next week starts tomorrow. See you then!

July 23, 2005

I am really glad I switched back to HIIT cardio: I'm already seeing results after just 5 days: my energy levels are elevated, I have not lost any muscle size at all so far (I measured this morning) and I love finishing my workout covered in sweat and exhausted (I'd barely break a sweat when I was doing 50-minutes of aerobic-level cardio, and when I finished I sure didn't feel like I'd done much of anything.) Something else I've noticed is that I lost some cardiovascular ability doing nothing but LISS cardio all those months. I have multiple reasons for working out: sure, I want big, strong muscles, but it's equally important that I'm at the top of my game in other areas - areas such as cardio vascular fitness. This past week has helped to remind me of that. I've felt great all week, and the only thing that's changed has been my cardio. My advice: don't listen to the debates. Try LISS for a couple of months. Try HIIT for a couple of months. Try alternating both methods for a while. See what YOU like best. See what works best for YOU.

Some people email me and I get the impression that they think I'm some kind of fitness guru. Nothing could be further from the truth! I've never positioned myself as an expert in the field of fitness. I'm just an average guy who did some research, got started and continued with a lot of heart and dedication. Most importantly, I've never been afraid to experiment to determine what works best for ME - even if that meant going against the advice of so-called "experts". I encourage everyone who visits this web site to adopt the same attitude. Developing your body and improving your health is NOT an exact science. It's not even difficult! What it does require is time, perseverance and fluidity.

I hope some of you who are frozen like a deer in headlights by the sheer amount of information out there will find this post helpful.

July 21, 2005

That rib I hurt a few weeks ago seems to be just fine now. I had a pretty intense ab workout yesterday and the rib didn't bother me at all. I'm a little disappointed in myself: I thought I worked out with enough intensity to at least crack the darn thing. I'll have to try harder next time. ;)

I bought a new piece of cardio equipment this week. Lisa wanted a recumbent bike for her Birthday (and I wouldn't mind having something to alternate with my elliptical workouts), so I got her (us) the Fitness Quest Excel 396r. It's nothing fancy, but a step up from the cardio equipment dreck I usually buy. We don't need any pre-designed workouts or over-the-top digital displays: just a solid frame, magnetic resistance and a basic time/distance/speed readout. I'll let you all know what I think of it after I get it together and do a few workouts on it.

It's leg day. My leg workouts are very tough, but also very satisfying. I'm feeling good this morning, so it should be an excellent workout.

I'm off to eat. Have a great day!

July 19, 2005

Yesterday morning I decided to do my first HIIT workout in (checking logs...) 11 months to the day! I forgot how difficult HIIT is! I've definitely lost some aerobic capability doing nothing but LISS (Low Intensity Steady-State) cardio for the past 11 months. Even though yesterday's workout was painful, I gave it my all. It felt pretty awesome! By the time I was done with my last 100% intensity interval my heart rate was 192 BPM, I was bathed in sweat and I was pretty winded.

Ready for this? I did the workout in a fasted state.

Ok, please calm down. Count to three. Relax...

Yep, nothing seems to get some folks' blood boiling faster than the subject of cardiovascular exercise for fatloss purposes. After reading many cardio debates on the forum, I suspect arguing about cardio may be more intense than actually doing cardio. I don't get it, but there it is.

Where was I? Oh yeah. So I did my HIIT cardio in a fasted state yesterday. I think if I did HIIT with anything in my stomach at all, it would be on the floor by the time I was done. I've decided to start doing HIIT cardio again because I need to shake things up - my fatloss progress is flat-lined. So, here's what I'm going to do: As long as I don't experience any muscle loss, I'm going to continue doing HIIT in a fasted state for the rest of my cut. I measure myself weekly, so if I lose any muscle I'll know about it quickly. I won't be changing anything else about my program for this "experiment". While far from scientific, at least at the end of it I will be able to say "I lost fat and no muscle doing HIIT in a fasted state." or "I lost muscle doing HIIT cardio in a fasted state." No matter what happens, you'll never hear me say that MY results are guaranteed for anyone else out there. Hopefully at least one valuable lesson will be learned from this: we can read all the books and scientific studies we like, and we can debate until the cows come home, but ultimately we've got to be willing to try different things for ourselves to see how our OWN body responds. That's what I do, and I think that attitude has helped me to change my body more than any other factor.

July 18, 2005

What an excellent weekend! I got some work for my job done, got some projects around the house completed, had the in-laws over for a cookout and a movie, did some gardening, watched an action DVD while Lisa was shopping and yesterday's workout was awesome! I even updated my Picture Gallery with a few new pictures.

Speaking of yesterday's workout, my bruised (cracked?) rib didn't bother me at all. I think it was just bruised after all. I think a cracked rib would be bothering me a lot more, and wouldn't be feeling better so soon. Good deal.

I'm off to vanquish some more fat. Have a great day!

Today should be a lot of fun: I bought some new rose bushes that I'm going to plant around the mailbox this morning, and later today I've got my pecs/delts/triceps workout. It looks like I'm not going to have to work today after all, so once all that's done I'll probably relax and watch a movie. Lisa's going shopping, so I'll probably watch something loud and pointless. :)

I hope you have a great day! See you tomorrow...

Ah, Saturday! Actually I have to work part of the day, and I may have to put in a few hours tomorrow, too. Such is life. After my workout this morning I'm going to do some cleaning and then run to Home Depot: My "Yard Of The Month" gift card is burning a hole in my pocket! I also have another gift card from Lowes, so I may hit both places. Actually, now that I think about it, I also need some Turf and Garden Pro. Only Ace Hardware carries Turf Pro, so I may as well swing by there and complete the Saturday morning home improvement shopping triple-header.

Speaking of the yard, I'd like to take some new pictures of it sometime this weekend and update my home renovation web site. The turf looks amazing: it's a very dark, almost bluish-green color and very lush. Many of the Crape Myrtles are exploding with color, and the roses look terrific. The Sapphire Duranta out back is loaded with blooms, and it looks like the weeping Loropetalum is about to put on a show as well. I think I'm starting to get the hang of this gardening thing! It's a lot of hard work, but I really enjoy it. I find it calming and therapeutic to work outside when the sun is rising or setting. These "mini-gardening" sessions have become a daily ritual for me, and the extra attention is starting to show in the quality of the plants. I think this new hobby has also helped improve my health and quality of life by reducing my stress level.

I'd better get the rest of the maintenance done on the server and get my workout in. Lots to do today!

My cutting progress is stalled. Despite a clean diet and no missed workouts, I'm in a plateau. I'm going to change some things around with my diet and cardio. I'm going to buy a stationary bike to augment my elliptical, and I'll probably drop a few calories and switch some of my foods around. I may start doing some HIIT again as well. As I get closer to 8%, I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to give up my weekly cheat meal for a while. That's okay - I'll be able to eat plenty once I start my bulk this fall. I don't want to start my bulk until I reach my goal of 8% body fat, so I'm probably going to wait until September to start bulking.

I've got a crazy day at work ahead, so I'm going to go get my workout done and get to it. Happy Friday everyone!

I'm pretty sure I cracked a rib last week doing vertical leg presses. At first I thought it was just bruised, but the pain has not subsided at all. Thankfully it's my lower "floater" ribs that are hurting, so the pain is quite tolerable: I can cough, get out of bed, lift weights... It's more of an annoyance than anything else. I did have to stop my ab workout yesterday, I felt like I may have been making things worse. I should be able to do my lower body workout later this afternoon, but I'm going to skip the vertical leg presses today!

Time for breakfast - see ya tomorrow!

Yesterday Lisa and I had a very nice lunch with Jeremy and Doreen Likness. Jeremy and I have had many phone conversations and exchanged countless emails over the past couple of years, so it was cool to finally meet him in person. The Likness Clan is moving to Florida, so I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of each other now. I'm looking forward to working out with Jeremy - I'm sure we can learn a lot from each other.

I've mentioned in the past that the Titan is engineered so that future add-ons could be developed and purchased after the initial sale. Brian with Fitcore posted about the latest new option, and it's an awesome addition to the Titan: Option "HPB" - Heavy Punching Bag. I can't wait to get mine! Fitcore has also partnered with Everlast, so you can get bags at a great price. Brian also announced a new Inversion Boots option that will be available at the same time as the HPB option (about 6 weeks). They are taking pre-orders now, so check out all the details here. I'll be sure to post some pictures in my Titan Photo Journal as soon as I get mine!

Time for cardio and abs. Thanks for stopping by, have a great day!

I had an excellent workout yesterday! As I mentioned earlier, I've been trying something new: Milos Sarcev's training method. To get an idea of what I'm doing, check out Milos' chest workout video, and his brand new quads training video. It's a little weird getting used to using lighter weights, but I'm feeling the burn in my pecs, delts and triceps this morning like never before.

I'm off to get my cardio in. Have a great day and I'll see ya tomorrow!

July 10, 2005

I guess the rainy weather outside threw off my entire family's schedule. We all slept until a little after 8:00 AM this morning! Normally I'm up by 6:00 or so, and if I do sleep past then the dogs always wake me up for their breakfast between 6:30 and 7:00. Lisa's not much help: I think she would sleep until nightfall if left undisturbed. :)

Today I've got my pecs/delts/triceps workout. Other than that, I'll probably do some cleaning and maybe catch a movie. See ya!

Sleep is so important to our overall health. I think just about everyone has experienced difficulty sleeping at one time or another. I don't think there's anything more frustrating than not being able to fall asleep even when you are dead tired. AtLarge's ETS supplement has ZMA in it, and the ZMA has made a huge impact on my sleep: on most nights I sleep deep and uninterrupted. Of course there are times when I wake up to use the bathroom and then have trouble falling back asleep. Usually this happens when my mind is racing with thoughts about a big project at work or whatever. I can't stop thinking about the project, and the clock keeps ticking. Something I discovered recently is that I sleep better when it's very cold in the bedroom. Some of you may remember that I bought a portable 12,000 BTU A/C unit so that I could have an air conditioner small enough to run off my 5.5 KW generator in the event of a hurricane. Well, the past few nights I've been running the portable A/C in the bedroom in conjunction with the central air and it's helped me sleep better than ever. I cool the room down to 61 degrees, snuggle up with Lisa and Loki (Turtle prefers to sleep in her own bed) and it's lights out! The portable A/C also has an air cleaner, so the air is fresh and clean. I also like the "white noise" from the fan, it lulls me right to sleep.

I'm running late this morning, but it's okay - it's Saturday and I'm going to enjoy it! This will probably be my last weekend off in quite some time (busy days ahead at work). I hope you enjoy your day!

July 8, 2005

Yesterday's lower body workout was excellent! I'm sore this morning, but nothing like last time (I was sore for 10 days after my last leg workout. Of course that was because I had not done a leg workout in many months.) I think I bruised a rib doing vertical leg presses. I had a lot of weight on there and came back a little too far on a few reps. The lower left side of my ribs are tender this morning, but it's not bad at all. I'll just have to be more careful next time.

Brian with Fitcore suggested that I try calf raises using the Titan's vertical leg press instead of traditional seated or standing calf raises. I did so yesterday and it was quite an experience - the burn was incredible! There are all kinds of undocumented exercises you can do on the Titan. I told Brian they should have a contest to see who can come up with the most innovative and useful undocumented exercise.

Cardio time. Happy Friday!

The next couple of months are going to be very busy for me. We've got some difficult, time-consuming projects going on at work, and that means I'm going to be putting in a lot of long hours. During this time my daily updates will sometimes be short and I may not be around the forums as much as I'd like. Of course my workouts will continue - hell or high water, that hour a day is mine!

I'm off to eat. Today's leg day! See ya tomorrow...

Milos Sarcev's style of training makes a lot of sense to me. After watching Milos' chest workout video on the latest Bodybuilding.com Fit Show, I've decided to incorporate some of his training techniques into my own workouts. For my workout yesterday, I lightened the load a little and totally focused on my form, cadence and mind/muscle connection. Normally after my biceps workout I feel a lot of soreness in my forearms, but this morning the soreness is all in my biceps. I felt like I had a very good training session, and I will continue to train in this style for the foreseeable future. I'm very much looking forward to my next bulk. I'm confident that I'll make some excellent gains with these techniques.

I've got meetings all day. There's a lot to hash out, and I'm afraid things could get messy. I hope we can keep the stress level down and focus on the issues at hand. Oh well, I'm off to do cardio and abs. Have a great day!

Have a wonderful day!

flag

Happy Birthday, America! I hope my fellow Americans have a fun and safe day of celebration.

Lisa and I had our home built in 1994, and we moved in about six weeks after we were married. I remember it well: it was July 4th weekend, and it was HOT. The electricity was on, but the air conditioner had not been hooked up yet. We could have stay ed at our old apartment, but we were so excited that we decided to move our stuff and stay in our sweltering house. It was uncomfortable, but we were so happy that we didn't mind the heat.

So, after 11 years in our home we FINALLY won Yard Of The Month! They came by yesterday to tell us the news put up the sign. We also got a Home Depot gift card, which I'm sure I'll have no problem spending. :) The turf is looking very good now that it's rooted in, been cut a few times and been fertilized. Here's a picture of the yard that I took yesterday:

YotM

I'm off to workout and re-install my garage door opener before it gets too hot. Enjoy!

July 3, 2005

Yesterday I went to Home Depot as planned, and spent way more money than I'd planned. I swear, I'm dangerous in that place. I purchased a Toro Personal Pace Electric Start mower, an Echo 21.2cc Straight Shaft Trimmer and a Genie 1/2 HP Worm-Drive "Excelerator" Garage Door Opener.

The mower is awesome! My old mower (A Craftsman) was pretty good, but it only adjusted to a maximum of 3.5 inches high. My new turf is so thick that it needs a mower with a lot of height. The Toro can be set up to 4.25 inches high and did a great job. The electric start and variable speed propulsion are really nice features, too. The coolest thing happened yesterday. I was trying to load the mower into Lisa's car, but it just barely wouldn't fit. A really nice guy in his mid-50s was walking by and said, "hey, that's not going to go. I have a truck, where do you live?" We loaded the mower into his truck and he followed me back to my place and helped me get it into the garage. You'd never know it from watching the evening news, but there are a lot of wonderful people out there. I'm inspired. I'm going to make a point of helping out the next time I see someone in need of assistance.

I used to have an electric edger and string trimmer, but the edger just wasn't powerful or tall enough to handle my new turf, so a few weeks ago I bought an Echo 21.2cc Stick Edger. That thing is amazing! It handles thick grass with no problem and makes a perfect edge with just one pass. I was so happy with it that I decided to buy an Echo string trimmer yesterday. No more tripping over the power cords!

Unfortunately there's a problem with the garage door opener. I've got to take it down and get it exchanged. That's not going to be fun, as it wasn't exactly an easy installation. It worked a couple of times, and man is it FAST. The door just rockets up! I think once I get the replacement installed it's going to be excellent.

I'd better save some energy: I've got a big workout today, and then we're having a cookout. It's going to be a fun day. See ya tomorrow!

Today is a big project day, as we're having a cookout this 4th of July weekend. I'm going to go hop on the elliptical for an hour, and then it's off to Home Depot to stock up on supplies. I'm also getting a new mower and string trimmer today. All you fellow homeowners out there know how much fun buying new power equipment is - I can't wait! I love going to Home Depot, but it's a double-edged sword: someone hide my credit card before it's too late!

July 1, 2005

Not surprisingly, today's pictures are a step backwards from my last set of pictures (May 1, 2005). I've definitely lost some muscle size, and I've added a little fat to my trouble area just below my belly button. Looking through the last couple of months of my food and workout logs, it's easy to see why: my shoulder was bothering me in May and I was unable to do any lifting that month; I missed a couple weeks of cardio because of my ankle injury; in June I chose to take two weeks off from all training while I was on vacation; I ate like a pig while on vacation and my diet in general has been a bit permissive. Like I said in an update a few weeks ago, at this point I no longer feel the need to be "perfect" with my diet and training 365 days a year. Hey, I'm human, too! I don't regret the choices I've made. Having said that, there's a time and place for dedication and consistency and now is that time! This month is going to be a great month. I'm going to eat clean, train hard and reach my goal of 8% body fat. Once I do, I'm going to launch straight into my bulk and gain the muscle I've lost back, and then some.

We all have setbacks at some point, and some people give up after a setback. That's not how we do things here at JSF.

I'm off to burn some fat. Have a great day!
