May 31, 2005

Yesterday's (5/30/2005) workout went great! My shoulder felt good the whole time, and it feels very good right now. Because I was unable to workout for the past month, I did lose some strength and a little size, but I can live with that - I'm just glad my shoulder is OK again. I put a few new pictures up in my Picture Gallery and Video Archive thread on the forum.

I also got my Home Renovation pictures posted yesterday. I'll be updating it again later today with the rear exterior photographs (the landscaping is going in today).

This will be my last update for two weeks. Most of my family is coming to Orlando this week, and I'm taking a couple of weeks off from everything. My last "vacation" was spent doing nothing but non-stop work, so I'm really looking forward to some much needed rest and relaxation. Daily updates will resume on Thursday, June 16th.

On a final note: As most of you know, running JSF and the forums is very expensive, and the costs continue to rise as both sites grow in popularity. I don't mention the upgraded membership "donation" system very often, but now's the time for the semi-annual membership drive. If you have already upgraded your membership or donated then THANK YOU! You are the ones who allow this site and the forums to continue and grow. If you have not upgraded your membership and have gained some value from this site and/or the forums, please consider supporting the sites with a membership upgrade or donation. More information can be found here. Without your support JSF can not exist.

I'm looking forward to my break, but I'm sure by the time I return I'll be recharged and ready to get back to my "normal" life. I hope everyone has a fantastic couple of weeks! See you soon...

May 30, 2005

I have the house renovation web site done! You can check it out here: www.twowiresthin.com/r2005/. The only part that is not complete is the back yard photos. The landscaping in the back goes in on Tuesday, so check back on Wednesday for those pictures.

Today is my first strength training workout in a month. My shoulder is still feeling good, but I'm going to be careful and not go too heavy just yet. I'm very excited, as this will be my first real workout on the Titan!

I hope you enjoy our home renovation pictures. Have a great day!

The sod is done and it looks incredible! I couldn't stand standing around watching the sod crew work, so I jumped in and helped. It's not difficult work, but it is physically demanding. I have a ton of before/after photos that I'll be sharing when I put up my house renovation web page, but here's a "teaser" before and after comparison:

Front Yard - Before
Front Yard - After

I'll be taking some more "after" shots once everything starts blooming. The difference should be even more striking!

I'm going to relax today. The pace has been pretty relentless lately, and I'm looking forward to a day with my feet up in the air and nothing to do. Enjoy your Sunday!

May 28, 2005

Our home improvement projects are finally nearing completion! Today the sod goes down, and on Tuesday the backyard landscaping will be completed. Aside from that stuff, I still need to pour some concrete, pick out and install a new front door and get an electrician to install my 10-circuit transfer switch for the generator (I know better than to try this myself).

Over the past few weeks, the owner of the company that is putting our sod down and I have hit it off on a personal level. Before starting his environmental service company, Will was a long-time cop, and ultimately became Chief Of Police before getting out of law enforcement. So the guy has some great stories, and sure knows a lot about guns. I've always enjoyed target shooting (but I don't hunt - I just don't have the stomach for it), so today he is bringing his "little friend" and we're going to head over to the shooting range. I've always wanted to fire an AK-47, so this should be a real treat! I'm going to have to leave the credit card at home, because I have a feeling once I fire the AK I'm going to want one.

After the sod is down, Lisa and I will be firing up the grill and treating Will, his Fiancé and the sod crew to a cookout. It should be a very fun day! I hope yours is, too. See ya tomorrow!

I've updated my Titan Photo Journal with some very exciting news about the Titan documentation. If you are at all interested in the Titan, you'll want to give my latest post a read, as it addresses my biggest concern with the Titan.

I'm running about 30 minutes behind, so I'd better get on the elliptical. Have a wonderful day!

May 25, 2005

The front landscaping went in yesterday as scheduled, and they did an absolutely AMAZING job. Of course, like all new landscapes, it will require a year or two to "grow in", but many of the plants we used are already quite large. A lot of people have emailed me asking what kinds of plants and flowers we are using. In the front yard we have a very large Crepe Myrtle, several Yellow Holly, some India Hawthorn, a large Ligustrum tree, 55(!) Yellow-Tipped Ligustrum bushes that border the property on each side, a large (and absolutely beautiful) Weeping Loropetalum, some Society Garlic, a nice Sago Palm (a must in any Florida landscape!), some Tea Olive (smells wonderful!), some Viburnum bushes, several Weeping Coculus, a few Rose bushes and a large Canary Island Date Palm.

The new sod goes down (front yard and backyard) on Saturday. We're using Grade A Floratam St. Augustine, which is a beautiful, thick grass with a deep bluish-green color. The backyard landscaping goes in the following Tuesday (a week from yesterday). My landscaper is still working his magic on the design and the plant selection, but I'm sure it's going to be incredible - he's a true artist.

Once all that is done, I'm going on vacation. While I'm on vacation I may work on my home improvement photo album and get that up.

Don't forget: there will be no updates to this site from June 1st - June 14th. Daily updates will resume on June 15th!

Have a great day!

May 24, 2005

Today's a big day - the front yard landscaping finally goes in! Lisa and I are very excited. This Saturday the sod goes down, and next Tuesday the backyard landscaping goes in. After that, we're going to be pretty much done with the house projects (unless we decide to replace the carpet, which I'm on the fence about). It's been a lot of hard work, but it's also been a lot of fun and a very rewarding experience. I'll get a web site set up sometime after I get back from my vacation in mid-June.

I'd better get going, the landscapers will be here early and I want to have my workout done. See ya tomorrow!

May 23, 2005

My diet has been less than perfect the past month or so, especially for a cutting diet. With everything that's been going on around here lately my schedule has been completely upside down. This unpredictable schedule has thrown a wrench into my daily routine, and It's been very difficult to eat properly all the time. Notice I said "difficult", not "impossible" - I don't make excuses. What I've done is I've allowed myself to make the easy food choice a lot of the time. I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed with myself. Rather that dwell on the negative, I did some thinking and made the decision to do a better job of planning. I want to eat the healthy foods I desire, and not continue to fall back on convenience meals like pizza.

In case you missed the news over the weekend, I've decided to endorse Fitcore and the Titan! Check my Titan Photo Journal for all the details and more photos.

My right shoulder is still feeling great! I'm so happy that it seems to be recovering. I'm going to resume weight training this Sunday, and I can't wait!

Well, it's time for my cardio workout. Have a fantastic day!

May 22, 2005

I was in the weight room messing around with the Titan and kept thinking, "what am I forgetting to do this morning..." Thankfully it dawned on me before my self-imposed 9:00 AM deadline, and I stopped playing long enough to update the JSF web site. :)

The Titan is capable of just about everything I'd hoped for, and then some. I absolutely love it so far. Is it a perfect machine? No, of course it's not. I've been having long, detailed conversions on almost a daily basis with the owner of Fitcore Technologies, providing him with feedback and suggestions. Thankfully most of the areas I've identified as needing improvement are not major. In fact, most of my suggestions have centered around the lack of written exercise documentation. The online materials are excellent, but I feel there should be more documentation included in written form. I'm very impressed with Fitcore's business ethic and willingness to listen and improve. I feel that Fitcore is a truly remarkable company: they take ALL customer comments very, very seriously. I'm proud to have my name alongside of theirs. So, it's official: I will wholeheartedly endorse Fitcore and their Titan. Look for my full written review in about a month (I need time to learn the machine inside and out), and my video review later this summer. In the meantime, I'll continue to post my thoughts in the Titan Photo Journal.

Have a great Sunday!

TheTitan is fully assembled! As always, you can check out all the details in my ongoing Titan Photo Journal. The photos don't really do the Titan justice: you simply won't get the full impact of just how serious this machine is until you're standing in front of it. It is my hope that my upcoming Titan video review will do a much better job of conveying the Titan's presence, build quality and remarkable engineering better than simple photographs. I've still got a lot to learn, so I'll continue updating the Titan Photo Journal on a regular basis.

Have a great Saturday!

I've got the Titan fully unpacked and partially assembled! You can check out all the details in my ongoing Titan Photo Journal. As I proceed with the task of getting the Titan ready for battle, I'll continue to update the Journal with lots of photos and stories.

I'm going to go do my cardio and then see if I can get another hour's assembly in before work! I'm also going to try to take a long lunch and get another hour or so in around mid-day. Stay tuned...

May 19, 2005

There's only one thing on my mind this morning - my Titan is here! I've got some pictures of its arrival (and a somewhat amusing anecdote about how I was almost crushed) posted in this thread. With a bit of hard work this morning I may be able to take this afternoon off and start unpacking it. I'll continue to post pictures in the above thread as I go. Eventually the pictures will be sorted and organized into a new Home Gym page. Of course there will be a detailed written review, followed by a video review. The Titan has a ton of features and capabilities, so it will be some time before I'm able to properly review the unit.

I'm going to get my cardio done and get to work. Have a great day!

I can't believe it! My shoulder is feeling SO much better! The pain I was feeling just one week ago was almost exactly the same as the pain I was feeling back in late 2003. I thought that I was going to be out of action for many months, but it looks like that may not be the case after all! I'm not out of the woods yet: there's still some amount of pain, and I have to be very careful about straining it before it's fully healed. Even though I've remained positive, I have to admit that the prospect of dealing with yet another long hiatus from strength training has been weighing heavy on my mind. If I can get back to training in a couple of weeks I'm going to be a very happy, thankful man. As the guy who helped me put up my fence said, "yeah man, you probably just strained your tendrils." ;)

Now that my ankle seems mostly healed up, I'm turning my attention to a much more troubling issue: my bad shoulder. Unfortunately the pain is persisting and I fear that I may wind up unable to lift weights for an extended period of time. As I mentioned in an earlier update, I'm going to rest my shoulder until the end of the month (which is going to be really difficult because my Titan will be here in a couple of days). If I'm still not able to lift at the beginning of June, I'm going to my doctor and will insist that I have the surgery. I've done everything they've asked of me, and although those things have helped it's clear that the underlying problem is not solved. Hopefully after the surgery I can get back to heavy lifting within a few months and have a worry-free bulk this fall!

I'm off to take care of some chores and catch a movie. Have a great day!

My ankle is no longer swollen, and the pain is minimal. I'm going to give it a couple days more rest, and will resume my cardio workouts on Monday. I'm glad it was nothing serious!

I've been getting a lot of questions about the Titan home gym. If you missed yesterday's update and are interested in learning about the Titan T1 home gym (mine's on the way!), you can read all about it here.

Today after breakfast I'm going to get my hair cut, and then Lisa and I are going to spend the day out and about. It's a beautiful day! I'd love to drop the top on the S2000 and take it out for the day, but we've got to pick up some items that won't fit in its meager trunk.

Enjoy your Saturday - see ya tomorrow!

As some of you already know, JSF is entering into a partnership with a company called Fitcore Technologies. Fitcore is the exclusive North American distributor and co-developer of the incredible Titan T1 home gym (the Titan T1 is known as the "Conan CN1" in foreign markets).

The Titan is unlike any other home gym that you've ever seen. I bought one, and it's on the way to me right now. In the weeks and months to come I'll be posting my initial impressions, followed by a very detailed written review and tons of pictures. I'll also be working on a comprehensive video review, in which I'll walk you through some of the capabilities and unique features of the Titan.

Many of you have been asking for information about the Titan, how much they cost and how to order one. JSF members are guaranteed the lowest price available, and our members will also receive greatly reduced shipping costs and a number of exclusive gifts with their order. I've posted a detailed Titan/Fitcore information thread on the forum. You can find out more by clicking here.

This is the Titan T1 Home Gym!

My ankle is definitely starting to feel better. I figure a couple more days of staying off of it and I will be fully recovered. I can't wait to start doing my cardio again - my cutting progress has totally stalled.

Unfortunately my shoulder is still hurting quite a lot, but it seems a little better than it was a few days ago. I'm trying to not use the shoulder as much as possible. I remain hopeful that it's just a bad strain and that it will be ok again in a few weeks.

Putting my fence up exacted quite a toll on my body: the movement of the post hole digger is really bad for people with shoulder problems. If I'm still in this house when the fence needs replacing again, I'm paying someone who doesn't have shoulder problems to put it up!

Have a wonderful Thursday!

I hope my ankle heals soon, because I hate not being able to do cardio in the morning. The swelling has gone down a lot, despite the fact that I managed to twist it once again (!) yesterday.

I'll be taking a couple of weeks off in June, so there will be no updates to this site from June 1 - June 14th. The last "vacation" I took involved pretty much non-stop work and little else. My June vacation will be spent relaxing, recharging and hanging out with my family (my mom, my sister, my sister's husband and my nephew are all coming to Orlando for a visit). I'm looking forward to a few weeks with absolutely no obligations!

Thanks for stopping by - have a great day!

May 10, 2005

The swelling in my ankle has gone down a lot. It still hurts when I press around that area or walk on it with my full weight, so I'm going to continue to stay off it as much as possible for the next few days.

Much more troubling than my ankle is my right shoulder. I must have injured it while working on the fence - probably using the post hole digger. It's been hurting more and more over the past few days, and yesterday the pain was very similar to the pain I felt when I injured it back in late 2003. I'm going to take a few weeks off from training. If my shoulder has not improved by the end of the month, I'm going to go ahead and have the surgery. I knew that eventually I'd have to go under the knife to fully correct my shoulder problem, so maybe that day is coming soon. I suppose now's as good a time as I could hope for: I'm almost done cutting and my bulk is several months away. The only downer (and it's a big one) is that my Titan is on the way.

Life is full of ups and downs, and that's what makes it so interesting! I'm a big believer in positive thinking, especially when things are not as we'd like them to be. I'm going to remain positive about my shoulder, count my many blessings and make the best of whatever happens. Hopefully I just aggravated it, but if not I'll look at this as an opportunity to correct the problem once and for all.

I tried to rest my ankle yesterday, but I just couldn't stand sitting around doing nothing. So, stupid, stubborn old John hobbled around doing projects most of the day. Of course the swelling got a little worse, so around 5:00 PM I finally acquiesced and plopped down in front of the television. This morning the swelling is much better, but still present. I shouldn't have any problem staying off of it today: it is a work day and I'll be sitting in front of my computer all day.

Have a great Monday!

First and foremost, Happy Mother's Day! I know I wouldn't be half the person I am today with out the love and support of my wonderful mom, so thanks for everything, mom! I wish I was in Texas to spend the day with you. I love you.

Well, I blew my cutting diet badly yesterday. Things started off well with a healthy breakfast, but I found myself out and about and craving a hamburger, of all things. I decided to grab a Backyard Burger, because I've heard great things about them. Yep, it was incredibly good! Had fries, too. As long as I'm coming clean, I might as well mention that I washed it down with a chocolate shake. Oh, it gets worse. I missed my afternoon meal, and then cooked a frozen pizza for dinner. Obviously a day of eating like that is a rarity for me, so I just relaxed and enjoyed it for what it was.

I've done something to my ankle. It's hurting pretty bad this morning and it's very swollen. I have no idea what I did to it. I can't do cardio - heck, I can barely walk on it! I'm going to try and stay off of it today and hope the swelling/pain goes down. If not, I'm going to go see the doctor about it next week.

I'm going to go eat and then get off my ankle. This will be the first day I've relaxed and not worked or done projects around the house in over a month. Maybe my body is telling me to chill out a little!

May 7, 2005

My right shoulder hurts. I must have aggravated it last weekend while working on the fence. It's not surprising with all the heavy, awkward lifting and the post hole digging. I'm going to play it safe and substitute cardio for today's weight training workout. I don't want to make the shoulder worse. It's not hurting anything like it was back when I injured it the first time, so I'm not too concerned about it right now. I'll just give it a week and try to use it as little as possible.

Last night's grilled steak dinner turned out absolutely perfect! Oh how I <3 my Weber!

Today after my workout Lisa and I are heading to Costco to purchase another 6-week stockpile of "protein" foods (and a few other staples): fish, shrimp, steak, pork chops, chicken breasts, canned tuna, beef jerky, almonds and coffee. Have a fun Saturday!

May 6, 2005

Hey, it's grillin' season! Let's talk about cooking out today...

Yesterday evening it was raining, and cooking steak on the grill in the rain is no fun at all. I switched my meals around and had my pizza cheat meal last night, and tonight I'll be having steak. I know I could have made the steak indoors, but my Weber Genesis Gold C gas grill has spoiled me: now I can't bring myself to make a steak any other way! I was always a charcoal "snob", but I've never been able to get a charcoal grill hot enough to properly "crust" a steak. I never thought I'd say this, but my Weber gas grill blows away any charcoal grill I've ever owned. IMO nothing makes steak taste better than the high heat of a gas grill. This grill makes the best steaks I've ever had in my life. Period.

Here's how I make the Best Steaks Ever. First of all, don't go overboard with lots of spices. I put just two things on my steaks: fresh ground salt and fresh ground pepper. I let the steaks sit at room temperature for about 30-45 minutes before grilling, and I put the salt and pepper on just before I throw them on the flame. Also, trim off any visible fat before cooking to help prevent flare-ups. I cook the steaks until the internal temperature is 135 degrees, flipping once halfway through the cooking time. The grill temperature must be very high (650-700 degrees) in order to get that wonderful crust and that perfect "steak on the grill" taste. Once the steaks come off, they need to "rest" for 5-10 minutes before cutting. This rest period allows the juices to stay in the steak, instead of running all over the place when you dig in.

I also use the Brookstone Grill Alert Talking Remote Thermometer. It works perfectly and takes all the frustration and guesswork out of grilling. It's so cool to glance over and see the exact temperature of the meat without even getting up from my chair. "Your entree is ready!" is my new favorite phrase.

I hope I didn't make you too hungry! Have a great Friday, see ya tomorrow!

May 5, 2005

I've been getting a few emails from people who would like me to post some pictures of all the house projects I've been working on. I'm not going to post anything yet, but once all the projects are completed I'm going to work on a detailed "house transformation" photo journal. I've taken a ton of "before" pictures, and will take a bunch of "after" pictures once all the projects are completed. We still have about another month of work ahead of us before that happens, so look for something in early to mid-June. I've owned my own home for 11 years now, and I've learned a lot along the way. Home ownership is expensive and can be a real pain in the ass, but it's also a very rewarding experience. When I was younger I didn't fully grasp the importance of maintaining and improving my house, but over the years I've come to realize that a well-maintained home is a great source of enjoyment and a huge financial asset. If I could give one piece of advice to new home owners, it would be "take care of your home!"

It's interesting to note that one could substitute "body" for "home" in the above paragraph and it would work almost as well. Of course taking care of our bodies is more important than anything. Without good health, nothing else really matters, does it? That's why is so sad to see how many people make health and fitness one of their lowest priorities. A few months ago my boss tried to Nextel me during my workout. When he couldn't get me, he called a co-worker of mine and complained a bit. My response was simple: "I bust my butt for you, and I'm available pretty much any time you need me. I'm not going to apologize for taking 1 hour for myself each day to workout and maintain my health. That hour is mine. You should be thankful to have an employee who's dedicated to remaining healthy and fit. If you have a problem with the 1 hour that I've claimed for myself, then I'll move on." It's not been a problem since. :)

I'd better get going. Thanks for dropping by, enjoy your day!

My aches and pains are slowly subsiding, but my forearms are still very, very sore. I'm going to skip today's back/bicep/traps workout, but tomorrow I'll resume my normal workout schedule.

My cutting cycle will probably be over by the end of the month. My waist is close to 31.5 inches, and most of the fatloss over the past few weeks seems to be coming from that area. My waist is the last place I lose fat, so it seems I'm finally closing in on my goal of 8% body fat. Right now I'm just a hair above 9% body fat.

I've got a lot of work to do today, so I'm going to go ahead and get an early start. See ya!

The fence is done and it looks fantastic! The sun was hidden by the clouds all day long (thankfully no rain), so the working conditions were much better than they were on Saturday. My partner showed up only an hour late (which is exceptional for him), and he even brought another man to help out. With three of us on the job, we finished the fence and all the cleanup by 5:00 PM. I'm really happy with how it came out. I'm very glad that the fence project is done - it was a tough one!

Physically speaking I'm totally beat. I went to bed at 8:45 last night and slept like the dead until 6:00 this morning. The sleep helped. I feel well-rested, but my body is not happy. Everything hurts. My forearms are so sore I can hardly type, so there's no way I'm going to be able to work my biceps tomorrrow. I'm going to take today and tomorrow off from working out and let my body recover a bit.

As always, thanks for visiting. Have a great Monday!

Yesterday's fence project was extremely physically challenging. I don't think my body has ever been in this much pain. My forearms cramped up so many times I lost count. At one point after my forearms cramped, all my fingers locked into a "claw" and I had to use my other hand to straighten my fingers! To top things off I also have 3 really bad blisters. At least I didn't step on any nails or break my thumb. This morning it actually hurts to type. My forearms, shoulders, legs and back are screaming every time I move. The best part is I get to do it again today, because we didn't finish. My partner didn't show up until 12:30 PM (he was supposed to be there at 10:00 AM), so by the time he got to my place I had the entire old fence torn down and stacked, and 25 of the 30 fence posts removed. Pulling up those old posts was NOT fun. The guy who is helping me had some outside issues he was dealing with, so he kept taking off for 1-2 hours at a time. I think he put in a good solid 4 hours yesterday. I worked from 10:00 AM until 9:00 PM with less than an hour total breaks. When we finished for the day he was like, "man I'm feeling it!" I just glared at him. Rain or not, he'd better come ready to work today.

Well, it's monthly picture day again! I lost some fat and some muscle this month. I lost the muscle when I was sick at the beginning of the month (I guess not eating for four days will do that). I'm not real pleased with this month's pictures, but between being sick and my vacation they could be worse.

No "official" workout today - I'll be getting plenty of exercise in the yard. I actually hope it does rain on us, as the sun yesterday was brutal. Have a great Sunday!
