My body fat is at 9% now. It's been slowly creeping up the past few weeks. I knew this would happen, but I'd be lying if I said it doesn't bother me. After all that work to lose weight, it just feels weird to see some of that fat come back. Of course all of it is just below my belly button, which is my "problem" area and the hardest place for me to lose fat (and the first place my body stores it). My first inclination is to cut my calories slightly, but I don't want to slow my bulking progress. For now I'm going to continue as I have been. If I continue to gain fat at this rate, I'll probably have to cut back on my food intake a little bit. We'll see how it goes. I need to stop worrying about it and instead focus on how well my bulking program is going: I have added some lean mass, and I'm much stronger now than I was a month ago.

UPS will be delivering my new hanging abs straps and my dipping belt today! The ab straps will allow me to put 100% of my effort and focus on my abs when I do hanging leg lifts, and the dipping belt will allow me to add weights to my dips. I love doing dips, but my body weight alone is not nearly challenging enough. I think the dipping belt is really going to help my pectoral development.

Today I'm working my back and biceps in the weight room. I'm going to go get started now. Hope you have a great day!

September 29, 2003

Well, the past few days have been a nice break from work, but today it's time to get back to the grind. I think it's going to be a pretty busy day....

Today I'm working my abs and then doing 23 minutes of HIIT cardio on the stair climber. I'd better get started, see you tomorrow.

September 28, 2003

Yesterday's workout was the best weight training workout that I've ever had! I seem to be saying that a lot lately, and that's good! I broke my personal max bench record, and I went up in weight on every single exercise that I did. My strength and size gains are coming very fast so far. I have to admit that I'm a little surprised at how well my bulking phase has gone this first month. I don't expect my gains to continue at this rate for the entire 4 months, but at least I know that the diet and training program I'm following is working.

Today is a day of rest, except that we have a lot of yardwork to do. Too bad the sun is not out, I could use some sun. After we work in the yard, Lisa is going shopping, and I've got the house to myself (the kegs and hookers will be here around noon, shhh). Have a good day, see you tomorrow.

September 27, 2003

I had a pretty good day yesterday; my pager only went off twice during the day, and once again at 4:00 AM this morning. With the exception of those 3 interruptions, I managed to stay away from computers all day! Last night's "cheat" meal was excellent, but I sure look and feel bloated this morning!

Today I've got a big workout planned. I'll be working my pecs, delts and triceps and will also attempt to break my bench press record again this week. I'm going to get started, cya tomorrow!

September 26, 2003

Ahhh, 3 days off. :) The past few months have been very challenging for me at work. September in particular has been especially difficult, so I'm really looking forward to a few days off to recharge my batteries. Over the past few months it has occasionally been difficult to get motivated to work out because my mind was pre-occupied with other things. But I always forced myself to do them anyway--and I'm always glad that I did. I feel like I've always been a hard worker, but I'm definitely a much more focused and productive employee now than I was before I started working out. I think a big part of the reason why is because now I start every morning off by doing something positive and relatively difficult. I believe that doing so makes the rest of the day go down a little smoother.

Enough about work! I'm going to go get my normal Monday-Wednesday-Friday workout in: abs, and 23 minutes of HIIT cardio (today on the stationary bike). After that I've got some work to do around the house, and maybe catch a DVD or two. :) Tonight I've got my weekly cheat meal of pizza and wine to look forward to! It should be a great day (I typed that last sentence while warily casting a jaundice glance at my pager).

September 25, 2003

Tomorrow I'll be taking the day off from work (as long as my pager stays silent). I am looking forward to a nice 3-day weekend. It's been a tough month at work!

I'm running a little late today, and I have a lot of work to do if I expect to take tomorrow off, so I'm going to keep this short and go get started on my workout. Today I'm working my calves, quads, hamstrings and glutes. Also going for a new personal best squat. :) I don't know how I ever lived without my power rack!

Have a good day, see you tomorrow.

September 24, 2003

It's amazing how this site has grown over the last 8 months. When I first started this part of my web site back in January, there was not a lot of information here. I had before and current "profile" pictures (I didn't have enough nerve to post front shots until later), and I had my weight loss chart. That's it. In January the site received 51,078 hits had 2,868 visitors.

Fast-forward to September 2003. I have just about everything I can think of that helped me reach my goals available on this site, and am always adding new stuff as I think of it or as it's suggested. The amount of traffic the site gets has grown considerably. So far this month the transformation section of my site has received 437,585 hits and 11,005 visitors. So far this year the site has received 2.3 million hits and has had 60,363 total visitors! By the way, I run this whole thing from one of my servers in my home office (it's a Linux server running Apache, MySql and PHP for those who are interested). Thanks very much to everyone who helped make this site a success. Your visits and emails inspire me to keep updating it and improving it. I couldn't do it without you!

Time for me to get started on my workout. Today I'm working my abs, and then doing a 23 minute HIIT cardio workout on the stair climber. Have a great day, see you tomorrow.

September 23, 2003

I'm getting ready for today's workout -- back and biceps -- and I feel really good this morning. All the extra calories combined with the more intense, heaver weight training workouts is making me feel like I did back when I was a teenager. It's strange feeling like that after feeling like an "old man" for so long! Yet another good reason to stay motivated...

Time for me to get started. I have a busy day ahead and a ton of emails I have not had a chance to answer. As always, I'll get to each and every one of them as soon as I can, so thanks for your patience!

September 21, 2003

Although it's not an official part of my training program, I should probably mention on my training page that every morning the first thing I do is 50 pushups. I do it because it helps get my heart pumping and helps wake me up. I've been doing this for many months now, but when I first started I could only do 35 pushups. I just increased that amount by 5 every week or two until I could do 50. Give it a try!

I'm up to 173.2 pounds as of today, and still at 8% body fat! When I weighed 173 pounds on my fat-loss phase, I was at 13% body fat. The difference is striking:

173 pounds & 13% body fat 173.2 pounds & 8% body fat

Yep, I weigh the same amount in both pictures. It's important to focus more on body composition (fat vs. lean mass) rather than overall weight. In the first picture I was carrying about 23 pounds of fat (13%), in the second picture I am carrying about 14 pounds of fat (8%). Hopefully these pictures make two things clear: [1] weight training is very important, and [2] I should have never bleached my hair. My god.

Today is my rest day, and I need it: my legs, abs, shoulders, triceps and chest are all very sore. Not only am I not working out, but I don't even have much yard work to do today, as nothing in the yard really grew much this week. I'll probably clean up around the house, and I have some stuff to do for work as well. I'm also going to try to get caught up on my email, and maybe watch a movie later. Hope you have a good day, see you tomorrow!

I gained a little more weight and another 1/4" on my chest this week. My arms are almost at 14.75", but not quite there yet. I measure arms when they are flexed, but not "pumped". After I lift weights and I'm "pumped", my arms are over 1/2" bigger than my reported measurements. My other measurements have not changed this week.

Today I'm going to work my pecs, delts and triceps in the weight room. I'm also going to break my max bench press record by 5 or 10 pounds. :) I'm running a little behind this morning, so I'd better get started. See you tomorrow!

September 19, 2003

Even though I have to do some work Saturday and Sunday, I'm glad it's finally Friday. It's been a tough couple of weeks at work! Tonight I'll try to forget all that as I enjoy my usual Friday "cheat" meal of pizza and wine.

I may have to up my calories again, as I have not gained any weight this week! You sure can eat a lot of food when you workout and stay away from junk! We'll see how it goes over the next week or so. I honestly don't know how I can eat anymore; I'm always full, and sometimes I actually have to force myself to eat!

My legs are killing me this morning from yesterday's excellent lower body workout (I broke my squat record by 10 pounds, and went up in weight on every exercise). I've been feeling very strong in the weight room the past couple of weeks, so tomorrow I'm going to best my old bench press record by at least 5 pounds. Today I'm working my abs and then doing 23 minutes of HIIT cardio on the bike. Have a great day, see you this weekend.

September 18, 2003

You may recall my 8/2/2003 Daily News article, in which I compared the tastes of several protein powders. I mentioned that I had not tried the EAS "Simply Whey", but would on my next order. Well, I got some in (chocolate) and it's excellent! It's one of the richest chocolate flavors I've tried. I've been drinking it for about a week now, and I'd rank it right up there with the Designer Whey chocolate, which is my favorite. My old favorite, Optimum Nutrition's chocolate, falls to third place (but I still think it's great stuff).

Today is leg day and I'm looking forward to a great workout, and I also plan to break my squat record. :) Time to get started. See ya!

September 17, 2003

I'm pretty tired this morning. I've been working on some time-critical problems for work this week and have not been getting as much rest as I should. The stress is also taking its toll, leaving me feeling drained. When I feel like this, I go ahead and workout anyway. Working out gives me an energy boost, and I'm always glad that I did it. Don't use stress and a busy lifestyle as excuses to not work out. Excuses don't get you any closer to your goals. At the end of the day no one but you gives two flips about your excuses. :) That may sound harsh, but it's true.

Anyway, thankfully I finished all my projects last night, and today I only have to take a new server to our head-end and deploy it. If all goes well with that, then I'm taking the rest of the day off (and will be staying away from all computers).

Today I'm supposed to work my abs, but they are still sore from Monday's workout! I may have to start working my abs only twice a week if this keeps up. My new ab workout is really intense, and they are taking much longer to recover than they did with my old routine. So it looks like just 23 minutes of HIIT cardio on the stair climber, then I'm going to eat and go get my work done for the day.

Have you ever seen the commercial (I think it's for Corona beer) in which some guy is relaxing on a beach, when suddenly his pager goes off? He calmly picks the thing up, and then skips it off the water like a stone. Yeah, that's a fantasy of mine...

September 14, 2003

Yesterday was my first day training my pecs, delts and triceps using MAX-OT. I had the best workout of my life! I think the big difference is that I'm no longer pre-exhausting my muscles before I do the really heavy sets. With my old pyramid training routine, by the time I got to the single heavy set, my muscles were already tired from the pre-exhaust. After the one heavy set, then I'd do a set of 12 (with no rest) using a lighter weight. I guess that's ok if your goal is to increase your muscle stamina, but it doesn't do much to build mass. Now I'm doing 3 sets of 6 per exercise using very challenging weights (after several warm-up sets, of course). For example, yesterday this was my chest workout:

BARBELL BENCH PRESS
-------------------
12 x warm up weight
10 x same weight
6 x warm up, increased weight
3 x acclimation set, increased weight
1 x acclimation set, increased weight
1 x max (this is not part of MAX-OT, but I like to see what my max bench is here)
6 x heavy
6 x heavy
6 x heavy

INCLINE BARBELL BENCH PRESS
---------------------------
6 x heavy
6 x heavy
6 x heavy

DIPS
----
12 x my body weight
12 x my body weight
12 x my body weight
(I need to get a backpack or something so I can do weighted dips)

A couple things to mention. I deviate slightly from the MAX-OT training so I can test my max bench press right after I warm up, but before I get into the meat of my workout (my max bench went up 10 pounds this week, btw!). You may have also noticed that I don't put the actual amounts that I lift. The reason is because what I lift is relevant only to me. I'm not interested in getting into a "pissing match" with anyone, that's not what this site is about. :)

You may have heard the myth "if you want to tone, do high reps with light weight". That's a bunch of crap. Simply put, high reps with light weights will help build muscular endurance, but it will not stimulate the muscle enough to cause growth. If you have fat covering your muscles, then all the high rep low weight sets in the world will not "tone" those muscles. It's simple: if you want to tone, go on a fat loss diet and lift heavy. If you want to build muscle, eat a lot of food and lift heavy. :)

Well, it sure feels weird not having a workout this morning. I am going to go get the yardwork done and do some things around the house. I managed to make a big dent in the emails that have been piling up all week, but I still have a lot more to get to. Thanks for your patience!

September 13, 2003

I expected to gain a little weight the first week of my bulking program, but I definitely didn't expect to gain 6 pounds in one week! I think the reason I progressed so much in just one week is due to a combination of several things: my increased caloric intake, the creatine and my new strength training equipment. I'd say so far my bulking program is going better than expected. Check out these numbers: I'm still at 8% body fat, my waist is still 31", my hips are still 35.5", and in one week my chest has gained 1/2", my arms have gained 1/4", my forearms have gained 1/4", and my quads have gained 1/2". Take a look at my stats chart (below) for all the actual measurements. I don't expect these kinds of gains to continue at the same rate (obviously!), but I'd say I'm off to a good start. I fully expect some of my future weight gains will be adipose tissue (fat!) along the muscle. It'll be worth it, because when I cut up again next spring I'm going to be a hell of a lot more muscular than I was at the end of my weight loss program.

Today I'm working my pecs, delts and triceps. I'm still a little tired from the stressful, nearly sleepless work week, but I'm going to shake the cobwebs out, crank the music up and go train. Have a great day, see you tomorrow!

I'm still dealing with the problems at work that I mentioned yesterday, but if things go well today I'll have everything under control and can finally go back to doing things like sleeping and answering email. ;)

My abs have finally recovered, so I'll be hitting those extra hard today, followed by a 23-minute HIIT cardio workout.

The first week of my bulking phase is coming to and end, and I'm very pleased with my progress. I'll have a full report tomorrow morning. Right now I'm going to get my workout in and then get back to work.

Oh yeah -- tonight I'll be having my weekly cheat meal of pizza and wine! :)

September 11, 2003

An emergency at work that I have to deal with will be taking most of my time for the next couple of days. It won't prevent me from working out--only injury or death could pull that one off--but I'm not going to have time to respond to the email that's been piling up for the past couple of days. If you emailed me and are waiting for a response, thanks for your patience--I promise I'll reply to every one of them just as soon as I can.

Today is leg day and I don't have much time, so I'm going to get right to it. See you tomorrow.

September 10, 2003

My abs seem to have finally recovered from Friday's ab workout, so today I'm doing going to hit them hard once again with some decline weighted crunches, decline reverse crunches, lying leg lifts and hanging leg raises. After that, I'll be doing 23 minutes of HIIT on the stair climber. I've got a crazy day ahead, so I'm going to make this short and go get started.

10:30 AM Update: Amazing, my abs are still sore from last Friday's workout. They felt okay this morning when I flexed them, but I did one crunch and felt the familiar ache. As much as I wanted to work my abs again today, it would be counter-productive to hit them again before they are fully recovered. Hopefully by Friday they will be ready!

September 9, 2003

I can't believe that my abs are still sore from last Friday's workout. That's 4 days and counting to recover. I'm definitely sticking to that ab workout for a while!

This morning I'll be doing my first workout using MAX-OT training technique, and also my first back & bicep workout on the new home gym strength training equipment. I'm really looking forward to this session, it should be very interesting.

I'm going to get started now, hope you have a great day!

September 8, 2003

I've decided to change up my weight training method, and I will no longer be doing pyramid sets. A lot of natural body builders (and regular people just like me) have made tremendous gains using something called "MAX-OT". I've been reading a lot about MAX-OT (Maximum Overload Training) and studying the program in detail for awhile now. It really makes a lot of sense to me, so I'm going to give it a go. For more information, check out my training page.

I'm on the third day of the creatine loading period, and the only side effect so far is I felt a little nauseous on the first day. I know the loading period is not required, but I'm a rather impatient guy by nature, so I'd rather load up than wait to see results. :) I'm drinking about 2 gallons of water a day during the loading phase.

My abs still have not fully recovered from Friday's new ab workout (weighted decline crunches, decline reverse crunches, lying leg lifts and hanging leg raises), so of course I can't work them today as planned. When I used my old workout of 100 regular crunches and 100 reverse crunches, my abs always recovered in 1 day, or perhaps 2 days at the most. When I woke up this morning and still felt soreness in my abs a full 3 days after my last ab training session, I started cracking up. I guess my new ab workout is pretty effective! They should look really good when I cut up again next spring. So, with today's ab workout cancelled, it looks like I'll just be doing 23 minutes of HIIT on the bike. Hope your day is a good one, I'll see you tomorrow!

September 7, 2003

It feels so weird sitting here knowing that I'm not working out today. I want to do some cardio, but I know I must cut back on it while I bulk. Besides, my muscles need a rest! My legs are still sore from Thursday's brutal workout, and my abs are so sore from Friday's ab workout that I literally can't flex my abs without wincing. In the past my abs have always recovered in 1 day, so for them to be this sore 2 days after I worked them makes me very happy. I always though I got a great workout from standard crunches and reverse crunches, but I can now tell you from experience that those exercises are not nearly as effective as what I'm doing now (weighted decline crunches/decline reverse crunches/lying leg raises/hanging leg lifts). Yes, the new gym equipment is going to make all the difference in my progress this fall and winter, I can tell already.

It was hard eating all that food yesterday, and I do feel a little bloated this morning. I guess it's a combination of the extra food and the creatine. I honestly think the hardest part of this phase is going to be accepting the extra body fat I'm going to pick up, and having a less cut physique for a while. I've got to get past worrying about that, somehow...

I may update the site later today with some new features if I have time. If not, I'll see you tomorrow. Have a great day!

September 6, 2003

Ok, time to bulk. The next four months will consist of lots of hard lifting and healthy foods. I love to eat and I love to lift, so I'm looking forward to this phase a lot. The only downside is I'm going to lose my abs for a while, but they'll be back soon enough, better than ever. :)

I'm not going to stop doing cardio altogether, but I will start taking Sundays off. My workout schedule will look like this for the next four months:

Monday: Abs & Cardio
Tuesday: Back & Biceps
Wednesday: Abs & Cardio
Thursday: Quads, Hamstrings, Calves & Glutes
Friday: Abs & Cardio
Saturday: Pecs, Delts & Triceps
Sunday: Rest, no workout

I will keep taking the same supplements that I have been taking, and as of this morning I've also started taking Creatine Monohydrate.

I'll be taking in at least 2500 calories every day, spread over 5-6 meals. I'm still aiming for 40/40/20 (protein/carbs/fat).

My weight training routine is probably going to change from what I'm doing now. I'll update my training page as I modify my workouts.

I've updated my FAQ, my training page, my stats and the main page to reflect my new goals. I've got a couple of new features for the site that I'm kicking around, so I'll probably make some more changes later today or tomorrow.

Today I'm working my pecs, delts & triceps and I can't wait to get started. This will be my first upper body workout on my new gym equipment. I'm going to crank up the music and get started now. Have a good day!

September 5, 2003

I took all new pictures yesterday afternoon of the new home gym. The lighting was much better this time and, compared to the first batch, the shots are better composed. I also re-designed the page so that the images are smaller (with the option to enlarge on a per-picture basis), and added captions. I also added some pictures of me working out. You can check it out right here.

Today is the last day of my summer maintenance program! Tomorrow I will start my 4-month bulking cycle. I've already updated my training page and my FAQ to reflect my new goals, and there will be a bunch of additional changes to this site on Saturday. I'm not a body builder, nor do I want to be one, so I'm not planning to bulk and cut every year like most body builders do. That's why I have to make the next 4 months really count. I'm going to spend the next 4 months bulking, then I'm going to cut for about 4 months, and then I'm simply going to maintain my physique, just like I did this past summer. I'm sure I'll slowly add additional lean mass over the years, but the next 4 months is where the majority of my growth will occur.

Time for me to get started on my workout. Today I'm doing 200 crunches followed by 23 minutes of HIIT cardio on the stationary bike. I'm going to try some new ab exercises on the new Powertec equipment -- probably incline crunches, incline reverse crunches, and hanging leg lifts. I'll update my training page after I experiment and see what I'm going to continue to use. Have a great day. Hope to see you tomorrow for the start of my bulking phase!

September 4, 2003

As I mentioned yesterday in my late update, Old Dominion dropped the ball yet again. They promised that my shipment would be delivered yesterday, but yesterday afternoon when I called to find out why it was not here yet, they said that it would not be delivered until Thursday (...pfft, yeah right). The guy told me that I could come pick it up if I wanted, so I did. The packaging was an absolute mess. It's a wonder that nothing was seriously damaged. As you can see in the above picture, there was a bit of cosmetic damage to a few parts, but they can be replaced without too much hassle. A big thumbs up to Powertec for making such excellent equipment, another big thumbs up goes out to Home Gym Warehouse for their friendly service, low prices and quick shipment, and a big middle finger to Old Dominion Freight for shipping my stuff across the country three times before figuring out it was supposed to go to Florida, failing to live up to several promises and damaging the product in the process.

If you didn't see the old/new home gym pictures I posted yesterday, here they are!

I'm almost always excited about my workout, but today I'm even more anxious to get started than usual. It's leg day, and I can finally go heavy on my squats and lift to failure! I also want to check out the leg lift and leg curl attachments. I'm going to go get started, see you tomorrow.

4:20 PM UPDATE: I took all new shots of the gym and equipment today at lunch and re-designed the home gym page.

September 3, 2003

If the information given to me by Old Dominion is correct, my power rack and bench will finally be delivered sometime later today. Given their track record with my shipment thus far, I'm not holding my breath (if you aren't familiar with the circuitous journey to which my gym equipment has been unwittingly subjected, you can read all about it in my August 29, 2003 Daily News update). If by some miracle the equipment is actually delivered today, I'll update this site later this afternoon with before and after pictures of our newly remodeled home gym.

Time for my workout. Today I'm doing 200 crunches followed by 23 minutes of HIIT cardio on the stair climber. Have a great day -- hopefully I'll have another update in a little while!

7:30 PM UPDATE: Of course Old Dominion failed to come through as they said they would, so I drove over there and picked everything up myself! I'll have the full story tomorrow, but in the meantime, I just finished assembling the equipment and here are the long-overdue pictures of my old and new home gym!

I've got a lot of work to do today, so I'm going to make this a short update and get right to my workout. Today is a weight training day and I'll be working my back and biceps. Have a good day, see you tomorrow...

September 1, 2003

Since today is a holiday (in the USA) I'll be skipping my workout. Holidays are the perfect excuse to loaf. I'm kidding, of course. ;) I haven't missed a workout in 239 days, and I'm sure not going to start now! As a matter of fact, since today is a holiday and my Nextel 2-way radio/cell phone is off (yeah!), I'm going to take advantage of the extra time and replace my normal 23-minute HIIT cardio workout with a 50-minute aerobic-level (152 BPM for me) cardio workout on the bike. I like to do this a few times every month to help keep my body "guessing".

With a little luck my new gym equipment should be here tomorrow or the next day, so I'll have those before/after pictures of my home gym that I've been promising up here very soon now -- just in time for my bulking phase (if you missed yesterday's "Daily News", you might want to check it out. I'll be starting my bulking phase in a few days).

I'm going to go get started on my workout. After my workout Lisa and I are going to do some chores around the house, relax, watch some movies and tonight we're going to barbeque. Should be fun as long as my pager doesn't start screaming at me. :) Have a great day and I'll see you tomorrow!
