September 30, 2004

September has been a heck of a month, and I'm happy that it's almost over. I'm also happy that tomorrow is Friday. If I don't get some time off this weekend I think I'm going to lose it...

I'm running way behind this morning and need to get my workout in before it's too late. Sorry for the brief update - blame my work. See ya tomorrow!

September 29, 2004

Yesterday I was definitely feeling the after-effects from lack of food, lack of sleep and stress from the hurricane. My workout was far from my best: I had to force myself to finish it, and I only improved on one exercise. I ate well yesterday and got a good night sleep, and this morning I'm feeling more like myself. I'm going to get today's workout done (abs and cardio) and then start trying to get caught up on my work so that I can take this weekend off. I have not had a day off since September 12th, and I really feel like I need a stress-free break from everything!

September 28, 2004

Hi everyone! We made it through the hurricane and finally have power again. It was a long couple of days in the hot, humid and dark house but we are actually very fortunate to have power back already. Progress Energy reports that it could take up to 3 week to restore power to all customers. I can't even imagine; I thought I was going to go crazy after just 2 days. If I never play another game of "Uno" again that will be just fine with me. We had some minor water damage to the carpet in the computer room, but other than that we got off easy. Some of my neighbors lost lots of shingles and some had tarps on their roofs. The neighbor just to the right us had one of his trees snapped completely in half! For us, this was the most violent of the three hurricanes we've experienced over the past 6 weeks.

Thankfully we only lost about $100.00 worth of food (mostly fresh food, some frozen veggies and some salmon). We were able to get the majority of our frozen food to Lisa's parents' house (they did not lose power) the day after the storm past and the curfew was lifted. Some of our frozen food would not fit in our coolers, so yesterday I cooked up a massive amount of chicken and shrimp on the grill. I'm going to be eating a lot of chicken and shrimp over the next few days! That's ok - it turned out awesome!

My thoughts and hopes for a speedy recovery go out to all the people who were not as fortunate as we were. This hurricane season has been one hell of a ride so far...

With many of my "normal" foods not available to me, yesterday's diet was a mess. Last night as soon as the power came on I ran to the store and re-stocked our fresh food supply (I've got a back, biceps and traps workout this morning and need my nutrition!) I'm going to go get started on that workout now. I hope it's a good one, but I'm pretty tired (not much sleep over the past 3 days), and I have not had a day off in over 2 weeks. I'm going to try to take a day off sometime soon or else I may go crazy and/or collapse.

It's great to be back! Thanks very much for all the kind emails wishing us well! I hope this is the last hurricane for a long, long time.

September 25, 2004

I'm looking at the projected path of Jeanne right now in disbelief. It almost seems as if these hurricanes are actually aiming for my city. Things were just getting back to normal around here: the roads are (mostly) clear of debris, power is back on everywhere, fresh water and septic systems are functioning properly again, cable, internet and phone systems are back up and most of us have restocked our refrigerators and freezers with food. If power goes out for an extended period of time (and that's looking very likely), we're going to loose hundreds of dollars of food. Again.

So I'm sitting here reading the news and thinking about how bad all these hurricanes suck, what a major inconvenience they are and generally feeling sorry for myself. Well, shame on me. Shame on me for being so myopic and petty. Yes - this hurricane is an inconvenience but nothing more. I'll live. I'm fortunate enough to live in a strong home. I have the means to replace spoiled food and rebuild fences. If power goes out I know it will be restored. I have food to eat. When I juxtapose my situation with what the people in Haiti are going through right now, things get yanked back into perspective real fast. Sometimes we need to step back and be very thankful for what we have, especially when faced with difficult situations. Yep. I'm ready for Jeanne. Bring it on, honey.

In other news, I've updated my FAQ with new information about the supplements I'm now taking from Kent Nutrition.

I'm feeling much better this morning and am going to go hit my pecs, delts and triceps in the weight room. I'll try to get some progress pictures up in my Picture Gallery and Video Archive thread later today. See you tomorrow (if I have power)!

September 24, 2004

It's finally Friday! I was looking forward to a couple of well deserved days off, but a lil' Category 3 hurricane named Jeanne may change everything. I'm resisting the urge to liter this update with curses. I know, I know: hurling insults at a weather system seems to be an utterly pointless act; however, doing so is scientifically proven to be extremely cathartic. Anyway, I'll save my outbursts for the storm.

I'm still feeling a bit under the weather this morning, but no worse than yesterday. I'm going to go ahead and do my cardio and then get to work. Hopefully I'll be feeling better tomorrow - I don't want to have to skip my pecs/delts/triceps workout!

September 23, 2004

I think the past couple of weeks are starting to take their toll on me: long hours at work, high levels of stress at work and no time off in almost 2 weeks have left me feeling a bit drained and under the weather this morning. I'm not really sick, but I sure can feel something coming on. Leg day is probably my most taxing workout, so I am going to go ahead and skip today's training. I need to do what I can to stave off whatever it is that's trying to get hold of me. I simply can't be sick right now - I've got way too much to do.

I'm going to go shower, get ready for work and get some food in me. I woke up this morning starving! I always seem to be more hungry when a feel a cold coming on. "Feed a cold, starve a fever", or is it vice-versa? I can never remember. Anyway, I'm bulking and need the calories so I'm going to eat.

I knew that I had a conference call at 8:30 AM this morning (which I'm still on as I type this), so I did my workout and had my shower before doing my daily update to this page. I'm presently on permahold, which I hate, but at least now I can still make my self-imposed deadline of updating the page by 9:00 AM. :)

Ah, gotta run now; everyone's back on the phone. Sorry about the brief update!

September 20, 2004

Yesterday's workout was very intense and very productive - by far my best workout yet. My body has been responding to all the food and hard work in the gym even better than I expected. I'm growing bigger and stronger every week, and I know I'm going to reach my bulking goals. I've been updating my Picture Gallery and Video Archive thread with bulking progress pictures at least once a week. Some of the photos in that thread are mirrored on my picture archives page on this site.

Of course the steroid accusations have started again, but I suppose I expected that. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I don't want, need or use steroids. Apart from the well known dangerous health risks, I don't know the first thing about steroids. I don't know how to use them. I don't know where to get them (and I don't care to, so don't email me with offers). It's this simple: I've never used steroids, and I never will. Period. My body is growing just fine with hard work, good food and quality supplements from All The Whey and Kent Nutrition. I've been honest about every facet of my fitness program and I always will be. If I were using steroids I would have no problem saying so.

My shoulder has been doing pretty well, and it seems to be handling the weight just fine. I'm extremely grateful for the physical therapy I went through. I think that played the biggest part in my shoulder rehabilitation. Of course I still need surgery to fully correct the problem, but the pain I'm feeling in it now is nothing like before and is very manageable. I hope the shoulder continues to hang tough, because I feel like I'm back on top of my game again.

Cardio today, then more work. After working all weekend I'm feeling a little burnt out. If I can, I'm going to try to take a day off later this week and decompress. Have a good Monday!

September 18, 2004

Bah, I didn't get any sleep last night and I have to head downtown first thing this morning for work. I'd planned to do my workout before I left for work; however, as tired as I am, my workout would be a complete waste of time. Instead of sleepwalking through my favorite training session of the week (pecs/delts/triceps), I'm simply going to simply switch my normal day off (Sunday) with today and hit the weights first thing tomorrow morning.

Well, I'd better eat, shower and get the show on the road. It's probably going to be another very long day...

September 17, 2004

I was looking at my body in the mirror yesterday while doing my weekly measurements and I noticed that I've gained a little fat just below my belly button (my "problem" area). When I gain any amount of fat that's always the first place it goes. I remember the last time I was bulking it really bothered me when I started to see some added fat in that area. I'm not sure what the difference is this time, but the small amount of additional fat is not phasing me in the least. Maybe the reason it's not bothering me this time is because I have the confidence to know that I can lose it without too much trouble when I'm done bulking. Or, perhaps the reason is because I no longer take pictures every single day and I don't feel the need to be shredded for the people who come to my site for the first time. I wonder, though, if the main difference between now and the last time I bulked is perhaps the last time I bulked it was simply too close to my initial fat loss phase: putting on any amount of fat after working so hard to lose it was very tough from a psychological standpoint. After almost 2 years of healthy living I no longer have the mindset of a "reformed" fat guy, so adding a little fat as I work towards my bulking goals does not present the same mental barrier that I experienced about a year ago.

Our newest sponsor, Kent Nutrition, has a few new products that you may be very interested in: Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondroitin Sulfate and MSM. Most of you who have been visiting this site for a while know that I swear by Glucosamine and Chondroitin. I've been taking Glucosamine and Chondroitin for a couple years now, and they've made a huge difference in how my joints feel. Of course Kent Nutrition offers the same great products I've been taking, but at a very substantial discount. I just placed an order for a 500g container of Creatine, a 500g container of Glutamine Peptide, a 300-count bottle of Glucosamine and a 300-count bottle of Chondrotion. The grand total for all of that stuff came to just $57.64. Awesome.

That was a long update, and I've got 50 minutes of cardio to do before work! I'd better get going. Have a great Friday!

September 16, 2004

Yesterday's menu was completely blown out of the water. I had to go into the office for what I thought was going to be a quick meeting. As it turned out, I was stuck there all day. I had a couple sizes of pizza for lunch and didn't have time to eat again until dinner. I knew that I should have packed my cooler! I just had a feeling that I was going to be stuck there all day. Around 3:30 or 4:00 PM, which is when I normally eat my afternoon meal, I felt like I was going to pass out from hunger. It's amazing how dependant I've become on getting some food in my system every three hours or so. I don't know how I used to survive eating just one or two meals per day.

My arms and chest have really exploded this first month of bulking. My cold/flexed arms are up from 14 inches to a little over 14.5 inches and a tad over 15.25 inches with a pump. My chest has gone from 39 inches to an all-time personal best of 40 inches. I expect that my progress will slow down some now that I'm back to where I was before I injured my shoulder last year.

Today is leg day, and then I've got another crazy day of work ahead. It's been one hell of a week at work so far!

September 15, 2004

Yesterday's workout was one of my best workouts ever. I still can't believe how quickly I'm gaining my strength back despite an eight-month layoff from upper body training! Yesterday I actually surpassed what I was lifting nine months ago on a couple of exercises - and I've only been bulking for less than a month. My shoulder is still doing great. Actually what makes my shoulder hurt worse than anything else is washing the car. Maybe I should stop washing the cars... "Lisa, dear, I've got a small request..." ;)

I'd better get in the gym. I've got a long workout ahead, followed by a difficult meeting at work and then I've got a lot of work that needs to get done. It's going to be a long day...

September 14, 2004

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I've finally begun working on my traps. I never really worked my traps directly until recently, and the lack of development in that area is very noticeable. I've added barbell shrugs and dumbbell shrugs to Tuesday's weight training schedule and things seem to be going well so far. I can sure tell that I hit them for a few days after my workout! My biggest problem is that my grip starts to slip on the barbell (even with gloves) before my traps start to fail. I've never been a big fan of lifting straps, but I may have to use them for barbell shrugs so that my traps can get a good workout.

I got my Kent Nutrition Dextrose in yesterday (10 pounds for less than 10 bucks + fast shipping!), and I'm excited about adding it to my PWO shake. I'm going to start with 30g of Dextrose mixed with my post-workout protein shake (All The Whey 100% Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Isolate). I'd use up to 60g of Dextrose, but I already get additional simple carbs from my post-workout banana and orange juice.

I need to get started on my workout because it's going to be another busy day at work. It always feels great to start off the day with a good pump!

September 12, 2004

As soon as I feel like I'm starting to adapt to my selected weight training exercises, I switch them around. I've found that soreness (or lack thereof) in the days immediately following my workout is a good indicator of how adapted my body has become to a particular training routine . Some may disagree with the "soreness" approach, but I find that it works very well for me. I'm generally very sore for at least two days following my weight training workouts. When that soreness is not as intense or doesn't last as long, I start using new exercises and changing things up. For example, something as simple as switching from decline dumbbell presses to decline barbell presses seems to work well. Switching the order of the exercises around also seems to help. Surprise your body and keep it challenged. When your body is faced with a new challenge it is forced to improve by growing and adapting so that it can overcome. If you allow yourself to grow complacent with your workouts and do the same routine week after week, then you're wasting your time.

Today's my day off, and I need it! I changed my upper body weight training routine yesterday and now I'm extra sore this morning. Somehow I have to get out there and mow the lawn, though. After I do that, I'm going to wash the S2000 and take her for a spin and then maybe watch a couple of DVDs with Lisa. Cya!

September 11, 2004

I've been doing upper body workouts again for about six weeks now, and I'm very pleased (and a little surprised) that my shoulder has been hanging tough so far. I've slowly been increasing the amounts of weight I'm lifting, and am pleased to report that I'm now back to 95-100% of what I was lifting (for all exercises) at the time of my shoulder injury. The last time I bulked (late 2003) it took me almost three months to work up to these same weights.

Honestly, I didn't expect my strength to return so quickly after such a long layoff. It's very motivating to be back on my game so quickly. I do have some shoulder pain right after my Saturday morning workouts (pecs/delts/triceps), but with a little ice and a couple days of rest it's back to normal (well, as normal as my shoulder is going to get without the surgery). I hope the shoulder continues to hang in there. I'm very pleased with my progress: so far I've added a half inch to my chest, a half inch to my arms and a quarter inch to my quads. My body fat is hanging tight at 9%, so my calories seem to be dead-on. Of course this morning I'm holding about 5 pounds of water thanks to yesterday's cheat meal. Papa John's pepperoni pizza always makes me hold a tremendous amount of water (lots of sodium and carbs in each slice).

All those cheat meal carbs make for a great workout the next morning, though, and that's just what I'm going to go do now. I'm feeling great this morning, and my walls are rattling with very loud motivational music (sorry, neighbors!)

September 10, 2004

I just ordered two more tubs of All The Whey's new Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Isolate. I've made some very nice size and strength gains in a relatively short amount of time while using their new hydrolyzed whey isolate (see my stats page). Simply put: I'm very impressed - I think the hydro isolate is awesome, and it is my new post-workout whey of choice.

As I mentioned before, you need to be aware before you order that the taste is not pleasant: see my August 18, 2004 initial impressions review for more details about the taste. Actually the taste doesn't even phase me anymore. I'm used to it, and can drink it down without any trouble at all. It's just kind of bitter. Anyway, forget about the taste! What we are after are gains, not culinary treats. Nice gains are just what you'll get when you combine proper nutrition and a solid strength training program with the highest quality whey protein isolate money can buy.

As long as I'm talking about supplements, I should mention that I'm expecting some Dextrose any day now from our newest sponsor, Kent Nutrition. This will be the first time I've tried Dextrose (Dextrose is used to help shuttle protein to hungry muscles post-workout). Combining the All The Whey hydrolyzed whey isolate with the Kent Nutrition Dextrose will make an excellent post-workout shake. People just can't stop raving about Kent Nutrition's products, prices and service. Place your next supplement order with them and find out why!

I'm extremely proud to have these two fine companies as sponsors of this web site. I really do believe in their products 100%, and would not recommend and use them if I didn't. Please support this web site and the forums and give our sponsors a try. You won't be disappointed!

Today is a boring cardio day: 50 minutes on the elliptical. Tomorrow, though, is another pecs, delts and tricep day. I can't wait!

September 9, 2004

While hurricane Frances was still pummeling us, the television and radio weather personalities kept mentioning a new storm that was forming, "Ivan". To most of us in Florida, this talk of a new storm was just background noise. After all, we already had our hands full dealing with the aftermath of hurricane Charlie and the walls of our homes were creaking from hurricane Frances just outside our front doors. Well, now it's looking very likely that Ivan (which, by the way, is now a very dangerous Category 5 hurricane) is heading our way. It could be here early next week. We seriously can't take much more of this. Um... "uncle"? Stop please?

I've lived in Florida and Texas (near Houston/Galveston) for 80% of my life and I have never seen anything like this. It just boggles the mind. We're going to do our best to prepare, but if this one hits like Charlie did things could go very wrong.

In the meantime, today is leg day! I'm off to do my workout and think about something besides hurricanes. Have a wonderful day, see you tomorrow...

September 8, 2004

Ahhhhh. Air conditioning.

Being without power was not fun, but I'm lucky - some of my friends and co-workers still don't have power. Of course some people suffered quite a bit of damage, so power issues are not that big of a deal compared to what many are going through. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to all who were in Frances' path.

Aside from no electricity, we also had some water damage to the carpet in the computer room and some other minor damage. The wet carpet and the hot, humid air combined with no power for two days made for a very smelly, sauna-like home. Of course the dogs had to go out to use the bathroom a few times while it was raining, so the wet dogs made the smell that much worse. I took the day off work yesterday so that I could steam clean the carpets and clean the whole house. Now things are much, much better. I slept like a baby last night for the first time since Friday.

We were able to save all our chicken and steak because they stayed frozen longer than some of our other items. We moved the chicken and steak to Lisa's parents' house (their power never went out) when it was safe. We did lose all our fresh food and some frozen stuff like veggies and salmon. With no power and a limited amount of ice we could only keep things frozen for so long until it was safe to drive to Lisa's parents' house.

I postponed my back/bicep/traps workout yesterday so that I could get the cleaning and carpets done. I'll be doing that workout right about now! See you tomorrow...

Our power went out shortly after Sunday morning's update, and it didn't come back on until last night (which was actually very quick compared to many of my friends and co-workers!)

I did take my picture yesterday, but I couldn't post it without power or Internet. Better late than never! Compared to last month's photo I've definitely added some mass. My arms are chest are growing...

I'll have a better update tomorrow, but right now I've got a million things to do. I just wanted to say we made it through the hurricane and get my picture up. See you tomorrow.

No update - hurricane/no power.

September 5, 2004

Somehow we still have power this morning, but I don't know how. The lights went out yesterday for a little over an hour after a relatively minor feeder band passed over us, but once the band passed over us the pros who work at the power company got us juiced again. I'm very thankful that they did, because at this point if the electricity goes out that's all she wrote until after the storm is completely over. The worst is yet to come for my area, so I expect that we will lose power sometime today. Unfortunately if we do lose power it will most likely be a week or more before they will be able to get it back on. If that happens, I'll try to update the page somehow. So, if you are reading this message after Monday morning, we're in the dark.

I'm going to sign off now because the wind is unrelenting and the lights keep flickering. I want to get this update posted while I can. I hope everyone in Frances' path is safe. Take care.

September 4, 2004

Thankfully the hurricane has weakened and is now "just" a category 2. Of course category 2 hurricanes are nothing to sneeze at, but at this point we'll take whatever positive news we can get. Unfortunately the storm is moving at a crawl. So, when it finally comes, we're looking at a minimum of many hours of heavy rain and unrelenting tropical storm force wind. The coastal regions will have it much worse. Good luck to everyone in its path.

If you didn't read yesterday's Daily News update, you might want to give it a quick read so you'll know what to expect with regards to this site and the forums post-hurricane.

Because the storm has slowed we should have power for at least most of the day. Very cool. Yesterday I figured that I'd have to do today's upper body workout in the dark (you didn't actually think I'd let a little thing like a hurricane become an excuse to skip workouts, did you? ;)) If the streets flood and turn into rivers then I'll do rowing for cardio. I think Henry Rollins' excellent and well-known quote is germane about now:

When life hands you a lemon, say "Oh yeah, I like lemons. What else you got?"

On that note, I'm off to lift. See you tomorrow (maybe!)

September 3, 2004

As most of you already know, yet another major hurricane is headed directly for the Central Florida area. The approaching hurricane is bad enough on its own, but the fact that many Floridians are still suffering from the effects of hurricane Charlie makes matters much, much worse. I want to thank everyone for their supportive emails, and I also want to wish my fellow Floridians the best of luck as we brace for the storm.

This storm is very big, and very slow. Things may start to go wrong for us as early as Saturday morning, and by Sunday morning we should be in the thick of it. I'm pretty sure there won't be any problem updating the site tomorrow morning, but after that who knows? If you don't see the site updated on time, or if you can't get to it at all, you'll know why.

Some of you have asked me if the forums and web site are in any danger of being destroyed by the storm. Well, I suppose anything can happen, but the chances of that happening are almost nil. My web site and the forums are backed up each day, and I have multiple copies of everything stored in various different physical locations on remote servers. As an added safeguard, tomorrow morning I'm going make a special hard drive with a backup of all my critical data, remove it from the computer, water-proof and shock-proof it and keep it with me as we huddle in the bathtub with glowsticks. ;) So, don't worry - we'll be back unless the roof falls on me. Even if that happens, I'm squatting quite a lot these days, so I'll do my best to squat the roof off of us. ;)

Seriously, we have a concrete block home, and we had it built post-hurricane Andrew. After Andrew, building code was changed to require roofs to be lashed down to the foundation. Barring a tornado or debris-come-missile attacks, we should be ok. We may not have power or Internet for a week or more, but if I can I'll try to update the page somehow after the storm.

Time for my workout, then I'm going to go prepare the house for the hurricane...

Check out what other Kent Nutrition customers have to say in the official Kent Nutrition review thread on the forum. It was this thread that first got me interested in Kent Nutrition; now I'm a paying customer, and very proud to have them as a sponsor of my web sites.

I chose to limit advertising on this site to a select few companies that offer products and services that I believe in and use. I would not put my name on the line and recommend something that I didn't stand behind 100%. This site is different than a lot of other sites in that respect, and the companies who sponsor this site are different than a lot of companies you may have done business with in the past. You will be pleasantly surprised by the service you receive. Please support this site and the forums by supporting the companies that help keep it running.

Okay, it's leg day and I have another (!) hurricane to prepare for. More on that tomorrow. Have a great day!

September 1, 2004

I had another excellent workout yesterday (back/biceps/traps) and my shoulder feels really good this morning. I've found that an ice pack applied to my shoulder for about 10-15 minutes immediately following my workout seems to help a lot.

I don't think I'll ever have to directly work my forearms: they always get a great workout when I'm doing my bicep exercises. Yesterday, about an hour after my workout, I felt my forearms cramping up - bad! If I even started to flex, or if I picked up something (even something light) I had to stop because I'd immediately feel the painful "clamping" sensation that we feel just before our muscles lock into a cramp. After a few hours it went away and now I'm just really sore in all the areas I worked yesterday.

I have a long workout to get done, so I'd better get started. Today it's abs and 50 minutes on the elliptical. See ya!
