September 30, 2005

It's Friday, but no cheat meal for me for tonight. I had my cheat meal for the week on Tuesday night because tomorrow morning I'll be taking my monthly photos. I don't want this month's progress to be hidden under a bunch of water! I took a couple "preview" photos last night after my workout. The first picture is pretty good, but wh0areume called me out for "accidentally" covering my trouble area. So I posted a second picture a little further down the thread that shows my trouble spot below my belly button. That's the last bit of fat remaining on my body, all in on "convenient" location. That's the spot I'm hoping another month of dedication and SGX will help me get rid of.

Today is the final day to submit your entries for the JSF LOGO CONTEST! Get those last minute entries in tonight before midnight EDT! Judging will begin sometime next week.

Tomorrow I'll be posting my first "official" pictures at 8% body since early 2004! See ya then...

I got the new heavy bag attachment (option "HPB") for the Titan installed yesterday! I ran up to Play It Again Sports and picked up an 80-pound Everlast heavy bag, a pair of Everlast weighted training gloves and some hand-wrap. Here are some pictures of the bag installed on the Titan.

After my back workout last night, I decided to forgo my normal post-workout pictures. Instead, I put the boxing gloves on and got a little silly.

The heavy bag is even more fun than I'd imagined it would be. Useful, too. I'm probably going to need it later this afternoon: yesterday's meetings were cancelled and re-scheduled for today. Nothing like a post-meeting bag pummeling to help keep the ol' attitude in check. ;)

I've got to be downtown in a couple hours, so I'd better get started on my cardio and eat early today. See ya!

September 28, 2005

I had a very nice day off yesterday. I worked outside for a bit, then watched a couple of DVDs. I also decided to have my weekly "cheat" meal last night: pork barbeque! I didn't want to have this week's cheat meal on Friday night because on Saturday morning I'll be taking my monthly pictures. I don't want to take the pictures while I'm artificially bloated with water: I've worked hard this month and have lost quite a bit of fat, especially around my abdominal region - I want those changes to show! I was already pretty lean before I started SGX, but I think the results I've achieved in a little over a month will surprise some of you. I'm down to about 8% body fat right now, I've lost several pounds of fat and I've packed on a few pounds of solid muscle. I'm going to stay on SGX for another month; I've still got some fat/water in my problem area, and the goal was to try and eliminate that. Since strength, muscle loss and energy have NOT been a problem for me, I see no reason to stop now!

Looks like meetings downtown today. I'd better get on the bike and get my meals ready. Have a great day!

September 27, 2005

Things got a little crazy at work yesterday, so I didn't get to take the afternoon off as I'd hoped. Thankfully I'm pretty much caught up now, so I'm taking the whole day off today (network gods willing, of course!) Where's my "happy dance" animated GIF?

I've received quite a few excellent logos over the past few days, so the logo contest is a definite "go!" Don't forget, the deadline for entries is midnight (EDT) on Friday night. Voting will commence sometime next week. I'm glad the JSF community is going to decide the outcome, because I couldn't possibly choose a winner by myself - many of the entries so far are simply amazing!

I'm going to go do my cardio, eat and then enjoy my day off. I'll probably get some project done this morning and then watch a DVD this afternoon. I was warily eyeing my pager as I typed those plans out. I hate that thing...

September 26, 2005

I felt pretty good after my cardio yesterday, so Lisa and I went outside and worked in the yard until about 11:30 AM. The gardens were more than ready for their fall weeding & trimming, and that's what we did. We got the front yard done, but the back yard is going to have to wait until next weekend. After the yard work, I made steak on the grill and watched a couple of movies before my delt/tricep/bicep workout.

My weight training workout was very good. I started off feeling a little shaky (I was probably still tired from the network outage ordeal), but by the time I finished my delts I was in the groove and feeling strong. I promised myself that after my workout I would go outside and Miracle-Gro the gardens, but I couldn't lift my arms. Sorry, plants!

I've got some projects around the house that I didn't get around to doing yesterday. I've got some work to catch up on this morning, but I'm going to try and take this afternoon off and knock those projects out.

Have a great day everyone!

September 25, 2005

I think I've pretty much recovered from the 24 hour network outage. I had my cheat meal last night (pizza, buffalo wings and wine), watched some exciting MMA action on HDNet and got a great night's sleep. I'm feeling bloated and groggy this morning, but I don't care. I'm just glad the network is solid again. Tomorrow I'll be piecing together my notes of everything that happened and assembling a post-mortem document. Those who valued their Friday night more than getting the job done may find themselves on the whipping post next week...or worse.

I have so many things that I need to do today: yard work, house cleaning, a couple of side projects... I just don't feel like doing any of it. I'm going to go do my cardio and see how I feel. I might just blow everything off and veg out today. I don't do that very often, but I feel like I need it. No matter what, I'll be hitting the weights tonight!

September 24, 2005

JSF and the JSF Forums have been affected over the past 24 hours by a network outage on Progress Telecom's network. The main site and the forums were not reachable from 2:10 PM EDT on Friday, September 23, 2005 until approximately 1:55 PM EDT on Saturday, September 24, 2005. It's been a very tough 24 hours as I've worked with other network engineers from Progress Telecom and Time Warner Telecom to find and correct the problem. The bad hardware was finally located and replaced in Tampa.

I'm going to sleep now. Again, I'm very sorry about the unexpected outage.

Important Logo Contest Update! The deadline for logo entries is just one week from tomorrow - September 30, 2005. So far we've only received a very small handful of entries. Hopefully there will be many more entries as the deadline draws closer, but as it stands now there are not nearly enough entries to hold the contest. Unless we receive a substantially higher count of logos by next Friday's deadline, I'm afraid the contest will have to be scratched and I'll have to hire an outside firm to create the new logo. All The Whey is sweetening the prize pot: the winner will also receive 10 pounds of their choice of whey! ATW is even picking up the shipping costs - very cool!

Let's see those logos!

Sorry, no time to write this morning! I'm running very late and I don't want to miss my cardio workout. Also, tonight is back and traps day! I'll get some new pictures after my workout if I have enough energy left to take them. Until then, I hope you have a wonderful day!

I've got some stuff coming from Fitcore today! I ordered an upgrade kit, which includes all the latest refinements (I want to have the latest version for my review), and I also ordered the brand new "HPB-F" option - the heavy bag! I think today's shipment will only include the support attachment for the bag - Everlast, who is now partnered with Fitcore (Cool!), is shipping the actual bag separately. I expect the bag to be here very soon! I'm going to get some bag gloves and some wrist tape this week so I'll be ready to go when the bag arrives. Here's how the bag looks installed on the Titan (I told you the Titan was expandable!):

September 19, 2005

Yesterday's workout was easily the best of my life. You can read about it and check out yet another series of post-workout photos in my latest series of photo journal entries.

My legs have finally recovered from September 10th workout. As you may recall, I substituted delts and traps this past Saturday (post-workout pictures can be found here) for my legs since they were still store. Today is normally a cardio-only day, so I'm going to go ahead and make up my leg workout this evening. I'm going to reduce the number of sets a little so that my legs are ready to go again by next Saturday.

Train hard - see you tomorrow!

September 18, 2005

My legs were still sore from last Saturday's leg workout (SGX leg day is a killer), so I couldn't work them last night. Instead of skipping my workout altogether, I decided to work my delts and traps. Tonight I'll hit my triceps and biceps in antagonistic superset fashion. With delts already out of the way, I'll be able to focus 100% on my arms.

I added a few new post-workout pictures to my photo journal. The vascularity in my arms and shoulders was something else last night! It doesn't show as much as it does in real life in these pictures, but in the first shot you can see some of it. The last shot is a bicep shot from the rear. I'm very happy with this picture because I can definitely see some improvement in my back - particularly in my lats. I've really been working hard on my back this past month. I've got another photo of my back from about a month ago, and there's been some obvious improvement since then. I'll probably put a comparison set of photos in my journal later today, after my cardio.

Speaking of cardio...

September 17, 2005

I had the worst nightmare last night! I dreamed that I ate my cheat meal and was enjoying some wine, when suddenly I found myself watching some bizarre Alice In Wonderland-esque music video from the 80s. Even though I was totally alone, the video was so excruciatingly bad that I felt embarrassed to be watching it. You know what I mean? I'm talking about the morbid, creepy, overwhelming shame one feels while watching something SO bad - so indescribably cheesy - that it defies description? Kind of like that feeling you get when you watch an episode of "Saved By The Bell" when no one else is home. Ahem. Anyway, this morning I woke with a start, bathed in a cold sweat. I was terrified that the end was nigh. I started laughing manically once I realized it was only a bad dream. Or was it...

September 16, 2005

Hello, everyone! I'm sure glad it's Friday: I'm more than ready for a well-deserved cheat meal and a glass of wine. I think tonight it's going to be pizza. I've been very dedicated to my diet and training program over the past month. I'm pleased to report that I've not missed any workouts or meals, and I've not strayed from my planned diet even once. Not that it hasn't been tempting; Lisa's been bringing home all kind of goodies like chocolate covered macadamia nuts. Damned ectomorphs.

I worked my pecs and abs last night. It was a good workout, but not my best. I kept the intensity level high and improved on a couple of lifts, but I didn't feel that magic "I can lift the world" feeling that I sometimes get. I took a couple post-workout pictures (looking fairly bloated for some reason) and put them up on the forum.

I'm off to exercise. Happy Friday!

The anti-inflammatory pills my doctor prescribed for my "hernia strain" are working wonders on my shoulders, too! My left shoulder has been bothering me quite a lot lately, but yesterday it felt better than it has in weeks. I worked my back and traps last night and had another very good workout. I started off with 4x12 low cable rows, then I did four sets of wide-grip pull-ups, then I added 10 pounds to last week's deads and banged out 4 sets of 12. I finished off my back with 4x12 dumbbell rows. I closed my workout by adding 10 pounds to last week's shrugs and powering through 4 burnout sets. I kept rest intervals very short - about 30 seconds between sets. By the time I finished my last sets of deads, I was breathing very, very hard and sweating like crazy. I love keeping the intensity of my workouts up: once my workouts start, it's GO! GO! GO! I'm very happy with yesterday's workout.

Looks like it's time for my cardio, then tonight I train again: chest and abs. I'm looking forward to an intense chest workout now that my shoulders are feeling better!

September 14, 2005

I've been on SwoleGenix (SGX) exactly one month. The scale says I've only lost about 1 pound, but my measurements and the mirror tell a very different story. My lower 2 abs - the last to show - are now fully visible. My "problem area" just below my belly button has shown slow, but steady improvement: One month ago it was 31.25 inches, today it's just below 31 inches. I've lost over a quarter of an inch from my hips, and a half inch from my thighs. My arms have actually grown! When I started SGX my arms measured just under 15.5 inches, they are now over 15.75 inches (cold) and are still slowly gaining size. I've also noticed a visible increase in the size of my traps. My chest has remained at 42 inches. My fat loss has been slow but steady, and I'm actually gaining muscle. I'm in no hurry - I'm already pretty lean, so I'll take slow fat loss with significant muscle gain over fast fat loss and no muscle gain (or muscle loss) any day. This morning I was walking around the house in my shorts and Lisa said she could see a big difference in my body. I'm confident that with another 4-6 weeks of hard work I will reach my cutting goals.

Unfortunately the biggest problem I face (aesthetically speaking) can't be solved with diet and exercise; that problem is loose skin. I have a very small amount of loose skin just above my belly button on my right side. It hangs down over my belly button on one side. It's very slight, but also quite noticeable and very bothersome to me. That skin has been there ever since I lost the first 55 pounds a few years ago, so I don't think it's going to go anywhere. I've always wanted that area to be tight as a drum, but my skin has shown no signs of tightening in that area. A little nip/tuck is probably the only thing that will fully correct it, and that's not something I'm comfortable with.

I'm running about 30 minutes late - I'd better go get on the bike. See ya!

I went to the doctor yesterday about the pain I've been feeling around the area of my hernia repair. Good news! The doctor pushed and prodded and said he felt no sign of any serious problems. He said I probably just strained the same area as the hernia repair, and he didn't see any need to take it any further. He prescribed an anti-inflammatory ("Feldene", AKA Piroxicam) and told me I could continue to lift weights with no interruption! The Feldene should also help with my shoulders, both of which are always hurting to some degree.

We actually discussed my shoulders quite a bit. He said we could move forward (meaning surgery) whenever I am ready. I told him the pain is quite tolerable right now, more of an annoyance and nothing like the pain I experienced when I injured my right shoulder a couple years ago. So, as long as I can lift and the pain is tolerable, I will avoid the surgery. He was fine with that.

When my doctor first entered the examination room he mentioned my 25+ pound weight gain (I last saw him in April 2004 at about 165 pounds). I told him to put away his BMI calculator and lifted up my shirt. He laughed and didn't say another word about it.

September 12, 2005

I did antagonistic supersets again last night for my bicep/tricep workout. I had the sickest pump of my life going - I thought my arms were going to explode! I put a couple pictures of my arms after last night's workout in my Picture and Video Gallery on the forum. I also put up a picture of my pumped arms from just one year ago for comparison. I've definitely made some good progress over the past year.

I'm off to workout and then I'm going to see my doctor about my hernia repair that appears to be failing. My doctor will probably just look at it, nod and say, "Yes, I'll give you a referral to your original surgeon." Damn insurance companies. I should be able to go straight back to the surgeon, but nooooooo.

September 11, 2005

Today is "chore" day: yard work, wash the car, clean the house. Hopefully Lisa and I can get all that done by early afternoon because I really want to watch some DVDs. My HDTV was long overdue for a recalibration. It's not a fun job, but yesterday I broke out my Avia calibration DVD, the color filters and my service manual. After I calibrated the display, I put the display into service mode and gave it a complete 81-point convergence (which it desperately needed) and adjusted the geometry. Now the blacks are deep and detailed, the colors are rich and vibrant and the convergence and geometry are dead-on accurate. Everything looks just about perfect! I also broke out my SPL meter and recalibrated my 7.1 surround system. After I finished all the calibrations, I popped in the new 2-Disc Special Edition of "The Deer Hunter" and was blown away. This is the first time "The Deer Hunter" has been released on home video in its proper aspect ratio with anamorphic encoding. Universal did a good job on the transfer/restoration: It's hard to believe the film is 27 years old!

I'd better get my cardio out of the way and get to work. I hope you have a great Sunday!

September 10, 2005

I had a very tough week at work, and yesterday I spent most of the day feeling angry and bitter about the hernia repair that appears to be failing. By the time Friday night rolled around, I was in an unusual funk. I declared to Lisa (with an appropriate amount of male bravado): "I'm going to tie one on tonight and party all night long!" Lisa just rolled her eyes and gave me a knowing smile. She knows me well. I rarely drink, I work out 11 times per week and I make sure 41 of the 42 meals I eat each week are 100% healthy. Simply put, I'm no longer capable of excess or debauchery. Let me translate my statement as it actually went down last night:

1) "I'm going to tie one on tonight..." (What really happened: I had two glasses of wine, and couldn't even finish the second glass.)

2) "and party..." (What really happened: I drunkenly surfed teh interwebs and told Lisa a lame joke I found.)

3) "all night long!" (What really happened: I was in bed before 9:00 PM, asleep by 9:30. Game, set and match.)

Oh well, I tried. I did have some great BBQ for my cheat meal before I went to bed. As for the hernia, I made an appointment with my doctor for Monday morning. I've been through worse, so whatever happens I can deal with it. Hopefully he'll tell me to just take a week off or something and I won't have to go through another surgery.

Have a great day everyone!

Great. I'm experiencing some pain and pressure around the area where my hernia repair is located. There's also a slight protrusion. Looks like it's back to the doctor to have it checked. I have a sinking feeling that the hernia repair is tearing open, and I'm probably going to have to have surgery again to correct it. Something's definitely not right. I'm always very careful about my breathing when I lift, so this is just totally unexpected. I'm going to see if I can get an appointment with my doctor today. I'm trying to think of a positive spin for this latest development, but I just can't. I'm pissed.

September 8, 2005

Last night was my back and traps workout. As you may recall from my September 2, 2005 Daily News Update, I'm not at all satisfied with my back, lats and traps. I've committed to focusing on those areas, especially during my next bulk. I'm currently cutting, but I still seem to be putting on muscle. It's no wonder: My SGX diet is dialed-in, and I've been hitting the weights with full-on intensity. Last night's back workout was even better than last week's workout! I started off with 4x12 low cable rows, then I did 4x10 wide-grip pull-ups. At this point I was nice and warmed up and feeling great, so I added 10 pounds to last week's deadlift weight and did 4x12 deadlifts. I wanted to keep the intensity going, so kept the rest intervals between sets VERY short - about 30 seconds. The short rest intervals allowed me to finish the first three exercises in record time, so I went ahead and did 4x12 dumbbell rows. At this point I was sweating so much it looked like I'd just come in from the rain. I was starting to get tired, but I added ten pounds to last week's barbell shrug weight and cranked out four sets of burnout shrugs. After my workout I made my protein shake and plopped down in front of my computer. Except to drink my protein shake, I didn't move a muscle for about 30 minutes. This morning I'm already very sore, and it's only been about 12 hours since my workout. There is nothing more satisfying to me than finishing a workout knowing I gave a 110% effort. That's how you get results in this game. Tonight is pecs and abs, and I can't wait!

Lisa dusted the bedroom last night just before bed. When she finished she turned to me with a satisfied smile and said, "There - we should sleep well tonight!" Unfortunately when she was dusting she accidentally turned on both alarm clocks. Keep in mind that these alarm clocks are NEVER used because I wake up on my own around 6:00 AM each morning. Well, one of the alarm clocks was set to the default of 12:00 AM. It blasted me awake at midnight and, because I'm not used to manipulating the controls, I actually just snoozed it instead of turning it off. So it went off again a little later. I had to turn on the light and figure out how to turn the damn thing off. By now the dogs were awake and freaked out. Of course Lisa wasn't disturbed - she sleeps like the dead - she barely mumbled "what's that?" and was back into a deep sleep before I could even answer. So finally managed to shut that alarm up for good, but it took me over an hour to fall back asleep. The other alarm clock in our room is only used for a radio and has the wrong time on it. After a nice, oh, 20 minutes of sleep, THAT alarm clock decided to go off. The time was 2:10 AM. Of course Lisa didn't move, and continued to sleep peacefully. So I shut the second alarm clock off and was just starting to drift back to sleep when guess who starts snoring? While I was weighing the consequences of murder, Lisa rolled over and stopped snoring. It took a while, but I finally fell asleep again. When I woke Lisa up this morning she asked, "How did you sleep, babe?"

I'm a wee bit tired this morning and running late, but I thought I'd share that with everyone. I'm off to do cardio now. Have a wonderful day!

After talking with Chris about my bulking comments yesterday, I've decided to stay on SGX and not jump into a bulk until I complete the SGX program. Over the past few years I've grown to really enjoy weight training. When you combine hard weight training with another great passion of mine - eating lots of food - bulking always sounds good! I'm eager to improve my weak back, lats and traps, but Chris is right: I need to finish what I started and be patient. I've got all winter to bulk up.

Speaking of weight training, what an incredible workout I had last night! I was a superset virgin until yesterday's arm workout. Man, talk about an INTENSE lifting experience! More details, along with a few new post-workout pictures, can be found in my latest Photo Journal entry.

September 4, 2005

As most of you know, right now I'm cutting using Chris Janusz's SwoleGenix (SGX) fatloss program. I've been on the program for 21 days and, as expected, I have lost some body fat. What's really surprised me is that I've definitely gained muscle: My arms are up a solid quarter of an inch since I started SGX, and I've also added almost a quarter of an inch to my chest. I was simply hoping to maintain my existing muscle while on SGX, so actually adding muscle is beyond anything I expected. I'm essentially at the same weight today as I was when I started, but I've lost fat. My fatloss seems to have slowed this past week, though, so an adjustment might be in order. Which brings me to...

... last night's workout. Last night's workout was excellent. In fact, I've felt so good in the gym lately that it's a little freaky. I attribute this to the SGX diet, and the fact that I'm now working out at night. Last night as I lifted I kept thinking to myself, "Man, it's September - why are you cutting?!" It seems like my body is aching to grow right now - I'm putting on muscle on a CUTTING program for crying out loud! Part of me wants to stay the course, but part of me wants to abandon SGX (for now) and start SwoleCat's SwoledUp (SUP2) bulking program. I could bulk for a few months, and then start cutting around February using SGX. By April or May, I'd be totally shredded and even more muscular. Spring starts early here in Florida, and I want to be cut up by then. I don't know, I'm still giving it some thought. Coach, what do you think?

September 2, 2005

Many of us have a three-day weekend coming up. I will probably have to work at least part of the time, but even the prospect of an extra day off is always nice! While most of us are enjoying our holiday weekend, there are countless hurricane victims who will be spending their weekend in anguish. Instead of cookouts and drinks, they'll be dealing with the loss of their loved ones, their pets, their homes, their livelihoods and their communities. Some people will still be literally fighting to survive. Please take some time to do what you can for the victims of Katrina. There's an ongoing thread on the forums, and you'll find information there on how you can donate to the relief efforts. I know this is an emotionally-charged topic, but this is not the time for finger-pointing. Right now we need to do one thing: pull together and help our fellow man.

My back workout on Wednesday night was probably the best back workout of my life. After taking a new picture of my back, I realized just how badly it is lagging behind. That point was really driven home when "j.simon" posted a picture of my back next to Skip "Abdominator" Podar's back. I realize that Skip's been training a lot longer than I have (and he also competes), but I've always aspired to his physique. In fact, Skip was one of my very first inspirations back in 2003 when I started working out. That tradition continued on Wednesday: I printed out the photo of Skip's back and taped it to the wall in my gym. It got me through some pretty difficult deadlift sets. Thanks again, Skip!

So last night was chest and abs. Another excellent workout! Honestly I feel like I'm on a slow bulk. I'm gaining muscle right now, no question about it. I put a few new pictures up on the forum. The first shot really shows the problem area just below my belly button that I'm working so hard to get rid of. Other than that one area, I'm pretty cut up right now!

I've rambled on enough for this morning. Cardio time. Happy Friday!

As most of you already know, hurricane Katrina has exacted a heavy toll on millions of people. A thread has been started on JSF where we can all talk about the disaster. There's also information on how you can donate to one of the many relief efforts currently underway. We know that JSF members who were in the path of the storm may not be in a position to post for awhile. We hope you and your loved ones are safe, and ask that you please check in whenever you are able.
